Recap / Ninjago S1E10 "The Green Ninja"

Go To

When Garmadon moves in to search for Lloyd, the Ninja learn that they must work together to find him.

Airdate: March 21, 2012

Lord Garmadon joins the gang on the Bounty to find and rescue Lloyd. While they wait for news of the Serpentine, the Ninja are forced to be roommates with Garmadon. This doesn't sit well with Kai, who is determined to unmask Garmadon's supposedly evil intentions, defeat him, and unlock his true potential. This backfires pretty spectacularly when the two face off and are found by Sensei.

When they finally find Lloyd, it's in the Fire Temple, the location of one of the Fangblades. The volcano destabilizes, and both the Serpentine and Team Bounty have to make a run for it. Kai attempts to grab the fallen Fangblade, Lloyd is trapped, and Garmadon has to be dragged out of the Temple, unable to help his son.

Kai lets the Fangblade go — and with it, his self-obsession — and saves Lloyd, unlocking his true potential at last. Lloyd is then revealed to be the Green Ninja.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Pythor still manages to get the third Fang Blade at the end.
  • Call-Back: The Fire Temple from the pilot returns.
  • Character Focus: As the last of four episodes focusing on the Ninja's true potentials, this episode focuses on Kai and his desire to become the Green Ninja.
  • The Chosen One: The Green Ninja is revealed in this episode: it's Lloyd.
  • Disney Death: It initially seems like Kai and Lloyd died in the Fire Temple's destruction. A few seconds later, Kai emerges, having unlocked his true potential and rescued Lloyd.
  • Enemy Mine: Lord Garmadon teams up with the ninja to save his son.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Kai can either save Lloyd or grab the third Fangblade. He naturally chooses the former, and unlocks his true potential rescuing Lloyd as the Fire Temple erupts.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Pythor decides keeping Lloyd hostage is not worth provoking Garmadon's wrath and leaves him behind as he flees the Fire Temple.
  • Living with the Villain: Subverted in that the gang knows very well who they're rooming with.
  • Papa Wolf: Garmadon is decidedly not happy about his son's kidnapping, becoming a veritable One-Man Army against the Serpentine just to rescue his son. When the Fire Temple collapses and Lloyd is separated from his father, Garmadon has to be dragged out of the temple despite his protests.
  • The Reveal: Lloyd is the Green Ninja.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Wu reveals Garmadon will be living with them, Zane complains that he has four arms now, leaving Jay to point out he's evil and has been trying to get the ninja's Golden Weapons.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: This is how Kai gets the Fangblade away from Pythor. Justified as he throws it like a javelin as in the proper Real Life technique, and his intent was to disarm, not harm.
  • Wham Line:
Kai: All my training wasn't in preparation to become the Green Ninja. It was... to protect him.
  • Wham Shot: The Golden Weapons reacting to Lloyd, revealing him as the Green Ninja.
