Recap / My Hero Academia S1E8 "Bakugo's Starting Line"

Go To

After the combat training lesson, the students and All Might reflect on their matches as they think about their next steps.

Tropes:

  • Always Someone Better: After losing to Izuku, Katsuki is further humiliated to realize that Todoroki, who has the power to freeze an entire building, could have flattened him just as easily.
  • Break the Haughty: Bakugo may have been top dog in his middle school, but applying to the best school in the country means being surrounded by people who are every bit as good as he is, if not better, and who aren't intimidated by his power.
  • Cassandra Truth: Izuku tries to explain the real nature of his powers to Katsuki, but Katsuki shrugs it off as nonsense to make him feel better and doesn't believe him, plus he is too busy being concerned how he is outmatched by everyone.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Izuku tries to explain the true nature of his Quirk, but realizes too late that he shouldn't have. Luckily, Katsuki wasn't listening.
  • Freak Out: Bakugo nearly shuts down at the thought of Midoriya outsmarting him. The fact that Todoroki's battle is right after theirs does not help matters.
  • Humble Pie: For Bakugo, being defeated by Midoriya and witnessing Todoroki's power was a brutal reminder that he's far from being the best in his class, and that there are many that are on equal footing with him. Needless to say that his former bullying victim had the temerity to stand up to him and fight back.
  • Invisible Streaker: Not that she can help it since her Quirk gives her perpetual invisibility, but Toru reveals that she has to lose all of her clothes in order to be "completely invisible" for stealth. She asks Mashirao to not look while she strips, though he thinks there is no point despite obliging.
  • Loophole Abuse: Midoriya and Uraraka thoroughly exploited the fact that this was just training. Midoriya KO'd himself to give Uraraka an opportunity, which could have got him killed if Bakugo and Iida were actual villains. On the other hand. Uraraka launched a dangerous attack that could have set off a real bomb, and also became too nauseous to continue once she touched the bomb (which wouldn't have done anything to a real one). Yaoyorozu points this all out.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: When All Might starts his speech about improving to Bakugo, his theme starts playing. However, when Bakugo interrupts him, the music stops with what sounds like a cymbal sound.
  • Pride Before a Fall: Bakugo is beaten by Midoriya, then witnesses some next-level power with Todoroki. He's no longer the top dog here, and it nearly breaks him.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Yaoyorozu explains that Midoriya's and Uraraka's victory was this, since they both took themselves out of commission while Bakugo and Iida were unharmed.
  • Secret-Keeper: All of the U.A. instructors are aware of All Might's injury and weakened human form. However, only Recovery Girl, the Principal, a close friend, and now Izuku know the true nature of his One for All Quirk and his passing it on to Izuku.
  • The Stinger: After the credits is a scene of Shigaraki learning that All Might is becoming a teacher at U.A.... and deciding to take advantage of that fact to kill him.
