On the night of the Five/Nine hack, Mr. Robot retrieves Darlene's gun from the popcorn machine with the intent of shooting Tyrell. Mr. Robot pulls the trigger in spite of Tyrell's pleas but fires a squib round that jams the gun. Tyrell believes this to be fate, but Mr. Robot insists that it will not happen twice. Tyrell calls Mr. Robot on his bluff, explaining that he can be a useful ally to continue the revolution. Mr. Robot accepts and relinquishes the gun to Tyrell in case anyone, including himself (i.e. Elliot), tries to stop it.

Outside of the arcade, Irving arrives with two Dark Army thugs in tow. As Mr. Robot and Tyrell discuss the second stage of their plan, the three walk in and hold the duo up. Irving takes Tyrell's phone and the gun, asking him to leave in his custody as he will soon be the most wanted man on the planet. Mr. Robot objects, but Irving instructs him to drive Tyrell's SUV to a pre-determined location in the city. Tyrell goes with Irving and company, leaving Mr. Robot in the arcade.

Taking Tyrell to a secluded cabin, Irving warns him not to leave the property. He is given a psychological evaluation by a Dark Army associate named Mr. Williams. Tyrell pledges loyalty to Elliot, after which he is given full disclosure to engineer stage two. As Zhang continues to manipulate the media, Elliot is arrested and imprisoned. Tyrell makes contact with him, but becomes frustrated by his behavior. Irving suggests that Tyrell take in the local nature and teaches him how to chop firewood, but Tyrell reveals that he has done so before as a child. Over the next few months, Tyrell becomes stir-crazy reading about Joanna's activities and watching his son through a baby monitor as he hacks the Dark Army's femtocell. Cisco then delivers the femtocell to Irving.

Tired of hiding, Tyrell ventures off of the property to a local town, where a police officer recognizes and arrests him. While waiting to be collected by the FBI, Tyrell manages to slip one hand out of his handcuffs. A van approaches, with the driver rolling the window down and killing the officer. Tyrell panics, but it is revealed to be Santiago, who was assigned by the Dark Army to protect Tyrell. Back at the cabin, Santiago rants about maintaining his cover as an FBI agent. He leaves, but not before insulting Tyrell for his actions. Irving sits down with him and discusses his similar past, having nearly lost his family and secluding himself in the interim. Tyrell is given hope by Irving that he will see his wife and son again.

Irving meets with Leon to confirm Elliot's release, and Tyrell is given the good news and shown the planning center for stage two: an old warehouse belonging to Confictura Industries, where Irving returns the gun to him. Lodging at a hotel, Tyrell prepares himself for the reunion with Elliot. Outside, Elliot gets into a cab while trying to follow Mr. Robot. Tyrell enters the cab with Elliot, and the two ride off to the warehouse to continue stage two.

Cue gunshot...

In the aftermath, Tyrell is reassured by Angela that Elliot will survive. However, Tyrell is even more perplexed by his behavior, which Angela explains as him becoming a different person a.k.a. Mr. Robot. On an operating table, Mr. Robot gazes at Tyrell and smirks.

"Don't look away, look at these tropes!"

  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: For all of his megalomania, Tyrell grew up on hard labor with an indifferent father whom he hated.
  • Broken Record: "Don't look away! Look at me!"
  • The Chessmaster: Zhang/Whiterose has enough clout to manipulate presidential elections.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The .so file extension in "eps3.2_legacy.so" categorizes files containing shared libraries that can be accessed by users who are running processes on different operating systems. Kind of like how Tyrell is engineering stage two in Elliot's absence.
  • Fanservice: Shirtless Tyrell chopping wood, complete with an impressive, manly beard.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: It doesn't take long for Tyrell to lose it during his almost half-year exile.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Averted. When Elliot is in surgery after being shot in the stomach by Tyrell, we see his stomach cut open with the intestines shown as the Dark Army surgeons remove the bullet.
  • Laughing Mad: Tyrell cannot help but giggle hysterically after Darlene's gun jams, with his face contorting into a twisted, open-mouthed smile.
  • Lower-Deck Episode: In the same vein as "eps2.6_succ3ss0r.p12", this episode focuses primarily on Tyrell's activities before, during, and after season two.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Many scenes from season two are shown again, but in chronological order and usually anchored by new scenes that elaborate on the context.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Wallace Shawn as Mr. Williams.
  • Riches to Rags: How Tyrell goes incognito.
  • Shout-Out: The opening credits and title card scroll upward from the bottom of the screen, in a very clear nod to The Shining.
  • Squick: Tyrell dislocating his own thumb to liberate himself from a pair of handcuffs.
  • Take That!: A very blatant one against Donald Trump, who had not even assumed the U.S. presidency yet within the show. Here, he is a political pawn of Whiterose.
  • There Are No Coincidences: Tyrell believes that him and Mr. Robot working together is destiny, further compounded by the gun jamming when Mr. Robot tries to shoot him.
  • The Reveal: The bullet casing found in the Fun Society arcade turns out to have been from Mr. Robot attempting to murder Tyrell with Darlene's gun, but failing due to firing a squib round.
    • Santiago is a Dark Army operative.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Justified. Mr. Robot would have shot Tyrell had the gun not jammed the first time, but Tyrell convinces him that he can be resourceful.
  • You Need to Get Laid: Leon makes this observation about Elliot, saying he's "wound tighter than a chinchilla's asshole", although he doesn't say it to Elliot's face.
