"What's your monster?"

"Demons are at their strongest while we're looking the other way."
Elliot

Reeling from morphine withdrawal, Elliot reveals his plan to hack Steel Mountain to the rest of fsociety: using a Raspberry Pi, Elliot would simply need to place it on a climate control panel within the facility. Using this newly planted backdoor, the temperature could be raised in the data vault, frying the tapes inside without causing undue harm or damage. However, Elliot realizes upon reflection to his previous conversation with Tyrell that redundant copies of the data are set to be moved to all of Steel Mountain's sister facilities across the country. If he and fsociety don't hit the road soon, they will miss their chance to cripple E Corp. Darlene and Trenton opt to stay behind at the arcade, with Darlene planning to make contact with the Dark Army to ensure their end of the bargain is maintained, and Trenton electing to keep tabs on the status of the Raspberry Pi and activate it once the time is right. Elliot, Mr. Robot, Romero, and Mobley then steal a van and begin their journey to the Adirondacks.

Meanwhile, Angela visits Elliot's apartment only to find that he is not there. Before she can leave, she runs into Shayla and Flipper. Shayla explains that she is taking care of the dog while Elliot is away, and recommends that Angela accompany her in the meantime. The two become fast friends during their walk, and Shayla offers Angela an ecstasy tablet, which Angela reluctantly takes. Shayla claims it will help her figure out the stress she is feeling in life, unknowing of Angela's plan to infect Allsafe with the compromised CD. Darlene and Trenton later try to find a Dark Army contact at their usual hang-out, but are unsuccessful, frustrating Darlene.

As the day winds down, Elliot begins to experience the worst of his withdrawal; vomiting, cold sweats, and tremors start plaguing him, forcing the group to stop at a hotel so Elliot can overcome the more incapacitating symptoms he is feeling. Elliot pleads with Mr. Robot to get him a fix so their mission can continue, to which Mr. Robot declines. Elliot insists that he needs just "one bump" to get him through the night; Mr. Robot remains silent...

...but seems to relent, hailing a taxi that takes the two to an opium den. Mr. Robot tells Elliot to go in, get his fix, and get out, all the while not attracting any attention. Elliot stumbles his way inside, and approaches the operation's primary dealer, only to find that he is selling heroin. Elliot accepts as a girl guides him to a couch where she injects him with the drug. Elliot's world spins in a stoned haze as a fight seemingly breaks out in the next room, during which a gun is pulled, and Elliot is seemingly shot along with several other people in the room.

  • Arc Symbol: The key.
  • Black Comedy: This moment as Angela eats Qwerty in Elliot's fever dream:
Elliot: "But Angela, he's my friend."
Angela: "Yes... and he is very delicious."
  • Fanservice: The steamy kiss between Angela and Shayla. It really serves no other purpose.
  • Foreshadowing: Elliot's fever dream gives us a tantalizing look at what is really going on inside his head; a lot of it points to Mr. Robot's true identity.
Mr. Robot: "We expose villains. We exorcise demons. Citizens of the world, we are here to help. If you have any interest in waking from your slumber; in retrieving lost, damaged, or stolen memory, we are here for you."
    • Angela's talk to Elliot in Elliot's headspace is revisited in the series finale, four years later. In this version of the talk, Angela states that Elliot was only born a month ago. This is one of our earliest hints that this isn't the real Elliot, but the Mastermind personality.
  • Insistent Terminology: Shayla giving Angela an ecstasy tablet:
    Angela: "Is this ecstasy?"
    Shayla: "No, it's clarity."
  • Mind Screw: The fever dream that Elliot experiences as a result of his withdrawal syndrome. Literally, all of it.
  • Opium Den: Elliot's fever dream has him entering one to get a fix and quell his morphine withdrawal.
  • The Oner: The heroin house sequence.
  • Red Herring: The episode attempts to divert suspicion away from Mr. Robot by having him interact with the money handler outside of the heroin house. As we later find out, all of it happened in Elliot's head.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Darlene's first reaction to seeing her boyfriend Cisco.
  • Word-Salad Horror: As Elliot receives an injection of heroin:
Elliot: "Have I sunk this low? What must you think of me? Is it spring? Election year? Shall I hibernate? Did we meet? In money we trust."

"Now, find your monster, and return the key."
