Suki's Bone: Suki makes an important archaeological discovery when she digs up an old bone tool covered with markings.
"Suki's Bone" contains the following tropes:
- Chekhov's Gun: The Neehiilak game pieces Molly and Tooey make come in handy later for fishing Oscar's kite out of a tree.
- Dinosaur Doggie Bone: In this case, not a fossilized bone. Suki is wholly unaware that she's just dug up an artifact and is content to play with and chew on her new bone until Molly trades her a piece of dried fish for it.
- Pun: Grandpa Nat says he has "a bone to pick" while holding the titular bone. Later, Molly calls Suki a "bark-eologist."
- Red Herring: Oscar discovers a rusted metal ring by the river, which he believes is a washer, until Molly later claims it's a thousand-year-old copper bead after seeing a similar artifact on a museum website. The kids then learn Oscar tied the metal ring to a kite tail and got the kite stuck in the tree. A good chunk of the plot is dedicated to trying to retrieve it—only to find out it really is just an iron washer from a modern machine.
Brand New Flag: Molly runs a contest to design an original flag for the Denali Trading Post.
"Brand New Flag" contains the following tropes:
- Artistic License – Space: An in-universe example. Molly mistakenly refers to the Big Dipper, an asterism, as Ursa Major, the constellation that contains the Big Dipper, while giving her state flag presentation.
- Dark Horse Victory: Suki accidentally makes the winning flag for the trading post at the last minute.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Auntie Midge, the tribal leader of Qyah. When Molly tries to pawn the decision on the winner of the flag design contest off on Midge, Midge flat out refuses, but agrees to help Molly figure out what she's really looking for in a flag.
