Recap / Milo Murphy's Law S2E37 "Sphere and Loathing in Outer Space"

Go To

Milo has finally arrived in Octalia, and is tasked by the Commander to get rid of a rapidly growing cosmic storm of negative probability ions (which the Octalians have been calling the Sphere of Calamity), as it threatens to completely overtake and destroy the planet. Milo approaches the Sphere alone, but getting rid of it prove to be quite difficult, although he manages to find a lone Octalian girl inside the Sphere. Once reunited with his friends, they prepare a plan on reducing the Sphere of Calamity together.

Tropes:

  • Covered in Mud: Diogee apparently loves to roll around in... whatever that icky green stuff on the ground is.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Remember that one moment in "Sick Day" in which the Octalian Commander was hugged by Milo as his mother, when strangely heartwarming music played? Turns out the Commander is a mother herself.
    • On a related note; earlier in the episode, the Commander notes that they call Murphy's Law "Orgaluth's Law". This is because her daughter, named Orgaluth, has negative probability ions swarming around her too, and is in fact the only Octalian with this trait.
  • I Am Spartacus: A large number of Octalians take on Milo's form and declare "I am Milo" to show they are willing to fight with Milo.
  • Last-Second Joke Problem: As Milo and the gang are finally ready to leave Octalia and return to Earth, the thrusters on their spaceship fall off, causing them to plummet back to Octalia.
  • Mythology Gag: At one point, an Octalian calls Milo "Mikey", his original name during the show's development.
  • Plot Twist: Milo floating around in space? That was actually Loab, shapeshifted into Milo. Milo and the rest of the Octalians managed to squeeze themselves into an escape pod in time.
  • Replaced the Theme Tune: Instead of the usual opening credits of "It's My World (And We're All Living in It)", we get a completely different opening theme that starts where the last episode left off: Milo floating around in space.
  • The Reveal: As it turns out, the girl inside of the Sphere of Calamity has negative probability ions just like Milo. And her name is Orgaluth... the Commander's daughter.
  • Ship Tease: Two significant Zack/Melissa moments take place in this episode:
    • When the spaceship crash-lands into Octalia, Melissa approaches Zack and wonders if he's okay, considering they just crash-landed on an alien planet and all, admitting that she is a little freaked out herself. Zack states he's alright, and proclaims that with all the crazy adventures he's been through the past few seasons, he thinks he's done being afraid, leaving Melissa very impressed. This is followed by Perry giving Zack a thumbs-up.
    • At the end of the adventure, Zack puts his arm over Melissa's shoulder. After realizing this, Zack backs out and stammers nervously, when Melissa gives him a kiss on the cheek. This is playfully teased by Milo.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Finally overcoming his constant fears during his friends' adventures, Zack fully charges into exploring Octalia and facing down the Calamity Sphere.
