Recap / Milo Murphy's Law S1E07 "Party of Peril"

Go To

Melissa and Zack throw Milo his first surprise birthday party, the only real birthday party he's ever had.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax / Duck!: Milo tells Eliot "You might wanna duck." Eliot naturally ducks his head, but Milo clarifies that he didn't mean "want to duck", but rather "want a duck", specifically the duck he found wandering the streets and put into his backpack. Milo then uses the exact same wording again, which Eliot assumes is the latter interpretation this time, but it turned out to be the former, and Eliot proceeds to get hit in the head by a tire dangling from a helicopter on a chain.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
    • Mr. Murphy prepares the party with flame-proof netting, radiation screens, and "glow-in-the-dark T-shirts in case of power outage".
    • While biking up a hill, Milo dodges such obstacles as trash-cans, a flaming dumpster, ball bearings, and... Slinkies.
  • Birthday Episode: Milo's.
  • Brick Joke:
    • The episode opens with a truck being loaded with ice cream, another truck being loaded with cake, and an airplane being loaded with explosives, with the drivers/pilots wondering "What's the worst that could happen?" Naturally, they all end up shedding their loads, which collide over Milo's party near the end of the episode and shower the guests in cake and ice cream.
    • Mrs. Murphy remarks early on that they can wrap themselves in mattresses in case of a duck attack. Guess what happens at the very end of the episode?
  • Covered in Gunge: Thanks to a freak accident, Milo and his party guests end up covered in cake and ice cream.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The banner disguising the entrance to the kart track reads "Industrial Industries - Serving the industrial needs of industry for the last fifty years"
  • Everyone Has Standards: Apparently a girl going scuba-diving with eels and some guys going bungee-jumping think going to Milo's birthday party would be too dangerous.
  • Eye Am Watching You: Elliot does this to Milo while going to put the duck in the pond.
  • Funny Background Event: You can see the pistachio vendors who first appeared in "The Dr. Zone Files" going by in the background, chasing their flaming pistachio cart.
  • Guile Hero: Melissa manipulates Amanda into becoming the Party Planner for Milo's party by suggesting that color-coordination and matching balloons don't matter.
Amanda: Don't think I don't know what you did just now.
  • Insistent Terminology: Eliot is not just a crossing guard, he's the "Safety Czar".
  • It's the Best Whatever, Ever!: Milo declares his party "the best birthday ever!" When it rains cake and ice cream, Milo declares it "better than the best birthday ever!"
  • Limited Wardrobe: Discussed; Milo admits he's got "like, thirty" spare sweater vests in case his clothes get soaked or damaged.
  • Literal Metaphor: When Eliot remarks that Milo's on his radar, he means it.
  • Long List: "Think of all the times you've helped me when I had a sprained arm! Or leg, or spleen, or tongue, or finger..."
  • Non-Indicative Name: One Armed Willie has both arms, but only one leg.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • We see a brief shot of the last time they tried to throw a party for Milo's birthday. Melissa wasn't kidding when she said "It did not end well."
    • Apparently Melissa has helped Milo twice when he had a sprained finger.
  • Overly Long Gag: Eliot being threatened by a duck.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Melissa uses these to convince Milo to pick up a package for her so he's distracted while they set up the surprise party.
Melissa: I even had to bust out the doe-eyes! Use only in case of emergency.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The truck drivers can be excused for wondering "What could possibly go wrong?" since one of them is transporting ice cream and the other is transporting cakes but a pilot whose airplane is being loaded with dynamite can't.
