Tropes

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
    • In the intro for The Dr. Zone Files, Dr. Zone and Time Ape are menaced by a series of aliens and robots... ending with a piñata monster.
    • Sara's flashbacks to various disasters that struck her and her brother include a train inexplicably crashing through her birthday party, the blades on a windmill at a miniature golf course spinning out of control, and dropping her ice cream cone.
  • As Himself: In-universe, Time Ape is credited "As Himself" on The Dr. Zone Files.
  • Brown Note: Apparently, Time Ape's true form would cause an ordinary person's head to explode.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The fan guidebook on The Doctor Zone Files, "The Doctor Zone Files Files". Lampshaded by Zack.
  • Doctor Whomage: Doctor Zone is an obvious parody of Doctor Who. The show he's from, The Dr. Zone Files, is very reminiscient of Doctor Who in general, with one alien race being mentioned, Trashcandroids, possibly being a mashup of the Cybermen, Autons, and Mechonoids from that show.
  • * Foreshadowing: a subtle one, when Sara goes to purchase Pistachios from Cavendish and Dakota she compliments them on their costumes, to Dakota's confusion, thus noting the pair's passing resemblance to Doctor Zone and Time Ape, this sets up two reveals down the line, firstly that the pair are in fact Time Agents, sent from the future to protect the pistachio nut from extinction, and secondly that the creator of Doctor Zone was in fact inspired by an encounter with Cavendish and Dakota that occurs later in the season.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The credits for The Dr. Zone Files go by super-fast, but are loaded with gags.
  • Hurricane of Puns: You could make a drinking game out of Doctor Zone's time puns.
  • Irony: Despite all of Sara's paranoia and caution, she's the one who ends up losing the tickets.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Parodied when Sara and Milo sniff the air, and remark that "It smells quiet..."
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: The inspiring music grinds to a halt when Sara loses the thread of her Rousing Speech about fandom.
  • Meaningful Background Event: At the beginning of Sara's speech, you can see the car that she sets her stuff down on drive off.
  • Overly Long Gag: Dr. Zone struggling to hit the "Time Shift" button with his gift-box hand. Time Ape gives an awkward Aside Glance.
  • [Popular Saying], But...: Dr. Zone, a time traveler, when he is flying off with the Time Bee-hicle:
Dr. Zone: Time waits for no man, except for me!
  • Portmanteau: After binge-watching The Dr. Zone Files, Melissa and Zack are both excited and confused about The Movie.
    Melissa: I'm... ex-fused.
    Zack: And I'm... con-cited?
  • Shaming the Mob: Sara gives an impassioned speech to the crowd of riled-up fans. Milo has to help her out a bit.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Show Within a Show: The Dr. Zone Files is a very Doctor Who-esque show about a time traveler with the same name and his sidekick Time Ape. Milo and Sara Murphy love this show to the point where they would watch it all night.
  • Stylistic Suck: Among other things, you can see a cable holding up Dr. Zone's Time Bee-hicle as it flies off, and the shadow on a matte painting.
  • Take That!: This episode takes a shot at sci-fi fans who can be really snobbish and rude.
Dr. Zone Fan: I'm just saying if you can't speak the Trashcandroid's binary language, then you have no place in this line!
  • Tempting Fate: Zack's remark of "What could possibly go wrong?" causes Sara to have flashbacks.
  • Visual Pun: When Sara asks the crowd of angry fans to "Lend me your ears," one of them offers her a pair of fake pointy ears.
