Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S3E4 Ninja Quest Part 1

Go To

The skeletal soldier named Rito Revolto arrives on the moon, revealed to be Rita Repulsa's younger brother! He brings with him several evil eggs as wedding presents for his sister and Lord Zedd. While waiting for them to hatch, Rito is given an army of Finster's "finest" remade monsters: Octophantom, Fighting Flea, Stag Beetle, and the Lizzinator. Will this makeshift team be more than the Thunder Megazord and White Tigerzord can handle? Meanwhile, Bulk and Skull announce a new mission in life: to join the Angel Grove Junior Police Patrol (all in an effort to impress girls).

Tropes

  • The Bad Guy Wins: The five remaining Dino Power Coins, the White Tiger Power Coin, and all of the Thunder Zords are destroyed due to Rito and four recreated monsters.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Rito is introduced emerging from a crater snarling and with Red Eyes, Take Warning, suggesting he'll be quite a sinister new villain. He then stretches and grunts in comedic fashion.
  • Beam Spam: What ultimately wins the fight for the villains and finishes off the Thunder Zords once and for all; Lizzinator spews his Super Stink Breath, Fighting Flea fires lasers from his antennae, and Rito unleashes pretty much every beam attack he has.
  • Beat: Everyone's reaction to Bulk and Skull announcing they'll join the Junior Police Patrol. Include Skull.
  • Big "NO!": Kimberly screams this as the Thunder Zords have been destroyed.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Bulk and Skull says this to Ernie for defending Billy after he accidentally threw the volleyball at Bulk.
  • Big "WHAT?!": When Bulk and Skull announce their plan to enroll in the Junior Police Patrol, it literally stuns the Rangers, Ernie, and the roughly thirty other people at the Youth Center into dumbstruck silence.
  • Broad Strokes: This four-parter loosely adapts the events of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, including the destruction of the original power coins and the acquisition of the Ninjetti (here referred to as just “ninja”) powers and Ninjazords.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Subverted; Rito and the other four monsters ultimately destroy the Thunder Megazord and White Tigerzord.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Zig-zagged; While Rito and his partners did destroy the Thunderzords, neither side was going down without a fight. This ultimately happens near the end.
  • Darker and Edgier: This episode sets the template for the rest of the season.
  • Darkest Hour: Rito Revolto wins the battle, destroys the Thunder Zords, and leaves the Rangers powerless.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Zedd gives Rita a new telescope to commemorate their anniversary.
    • Rita and Rito are quite happy to see each other again.
  • Foreshadowing: Rito alludes to his and Rita's father being a nasty piece of work.
  • Get Out!: Rita screams this when Rito doesn't know the where the exit is.
  • Good-Looking Privates: Bulk and Skull decide to become cops hoping to impress uniform-loving girls.
  • Hope Spot: Alpha siphoning some power back into the Zords leads to Rito taking a nasty hit, but the turnaround is very short-lived.
  • Insult Backfire: When Rita announces that Rito is her brother:
Goldar: I knew I smelled something rotting.
Rito: (sniffs at his armpits) Oh. Yeah. Yeah, that'd be me, alright.
  • Jaw Drop: Bulk's announcement that he and Skull are joining the police is met with this, even Skull.
  • Make My Monster Grow: The first time we see Zedd and Rita combine their staff and magic wand to grow the monsters, and they do that from here onward, ditching Zedd's grenade.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Billy senses when Rito crash-landed on the moon.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: As the Rangers fight off Rito and four other monsters, Zordon informs them that if they keep on fighting, the flux of power could ultimately strip them of their Ranger powers. Tommy's response is "That's a risk we'll just have to take." The end result: the Dinosaur and White Tiger Power Coins fried, the Zords fall apart (literally), and the Command Center is trashed, partially.
    • What makes it even worse is that it's not even as if they lost their powers defending the city. Rito's mission was specifically to fight the Rangers and nothing else. A retreat would have actually foiled Zedd and Rita's plan, unless they planned on targeting the city if the Rangers DID retreat.
  • No-Sell: Rito effortlessly deflects the Tigerzord's Finishing Move, sending it right back where it came from.
  • Pet the Dog: Zedd congratulates Finster for recreating four old monsters with increased power.
  • Stock Footage: Downplayed; while it's sprinkled in from time to time, most of the battle is new footage, and the callings of the Thunderzords are reshot.
  • Team Rocket Wins: Zedd and Rita send Rito and a group of monsters that ambush the Rangers, destroying their Dino Power Coins and the Thunder Zords.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The Rangers over not just getting ejected from their Zords but also de-morphing.
  • Wham Episode: Rita has a brother who destroys the Zords and renders the Power Coins inoperable to the point where using them risks killing the user.
  • Wham Shot: The Zords falling apart.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The Thunder Zords being destroyed by Rito Revolto and his back-up monsters. It's implied that the Rangers and Zords would've been able to handle the fight just fine had the Command Center not been acting up beforehand and been able to alert the Rangers to exactly how many monsters were actually present.
