Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E14 Missing Green

Go To

Jason is having trouble focusing on a big karate tournament. He still feels guilty over failing to get the Green Candle which resulted in Tommy losing his Green Ranger Powers to begin with. The other four Ranger Teens decide to cheer him up, by going in search of Tommy, whom they believe to be at his uncle's cabin. On the way there, Goldar kidnaps the four, and creates Pink, Yellow, Blue & Black Candles, with which to drain their Ranger powers! Can the Red Ranger, fighting alone against a swarm of Putties, Goldar, and the Pipebrain Monster (made from the tournament trophy), prevent history from repeating?

Tropes

  • The Chains of Commanding: Jason's guilt stems from how he had to make the call between either getting the Green Candle or saving Tommy's life. Zordon's pep talk involves noting how leaders always have to make the big decisions and maintain proper perspective on what's needed most in a given situation.
  • Commuting on a Bus: Jason David Frank makes a brief cameo during this episode, but is otherwise absent for the next two episodes.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Jason. The other Rangers get kidnapped, and it's up to him to save the day by himself.
  • Death by Irony: What Zedd hopes for by turning the tournament trophy that Jason wants to win into the newest monster.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
Lord Zedd: I don't understand it. The more I divide them, the more they come together.
  • Evil Laugh: Zedd when deciding to make the tournament trophy into his latest monster.
  • Foreshadowing: Tommy is wearing white.
  • Friendship Moment: In his letter, Tommy assures Jason that he never blamed him for the loss of his Green Ranger powers.
  • Gate Guardian: Zordon states that Jason must destroy Pipebrain, in order to access the dimension that the others are being held in.
  • Grand Finale: This episode is effectively one last hurrah for Jason prior to Austin St John's departure.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Jason begins to suffer this when he sees his friends are about to lose their powers too.
Zordon: Jason, you must control your anger. This is exactly the reaction Lord Zedd wants. You must not let him get the upper hand.
  • Honor Before Reason: Zordon warns that Jason's powers could also be lost if he tries to save the others. Jason says that's a chance he's willing to take.
  • Hypocrite: In reference to how easily he turned on Rita:
Lord Zedd: So, the Red Ranger is feeling guilty, is he?
Goldar: Yes, these foolish humans have an incredible sense of loyalty.
Lord Zedd: A character flaw you obviously don't suffer from.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Zordon and Alpha tells Jason he made the right choice saving Tommy over getting the candle.
  • Irony: The melted sliver of the Green Candle is used to the light flames of the other Rangers' candles. Goldar is most amused that the last bit of Tommy's powers will be used to drain his friends'.
  • It's All My Fault/My Greatest Failure: Jason still blames himself for Tommy losing his powers. Tommy writes to him that it wasn't his fault, and Jason was finally over it.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Jason fights his way through Zedd's forces to save the others from losing their powers like Tommy did.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After breaking free of Pipebrain's tentacle, the Red Dragon Thunder Zord delivers one of these.
  • One-Man Army: Jason in this episode single-handedly takes down a squad of Putties, the Pipe Brain monster, and Goldar in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Pet the Dog: Zedd actually congratulates Goldar for successfully capturing the other Rangers.
  • Playing Possum: After some back-and-forth hits, Pipebrain gets knocked over and makes a show of passing out. During Jason's moment of hesitation, he ensnares the Red Dragon Thunder Zord in a tentacle.
    Pipebrain: Just kidding!
  • Race Against the Clock: Jason has until the candles are burned down to save the others' powers. After fighting his way through Z-Putties, Pipebrain, and Goldar, he just barely makes it.
  • Sadist: Though draining four Rangers' powers has an obvious tactical benefit, Zedd demonstrates he's just as interested in tormenting Jason.
Zedd: I wonder how the Red Ranger will feel after the remaining Rangers' powers have been drained and extinguished, as once again he stands powerless to stop it. [laughs]
  • Sequel Episode: To "The Green Candle" two-parter, as Jason regrets his earlier failure and Zedd seeks to compound that guilt by using similar candles to drain the others' powers.
  • So Proud of You: Zordon towards Jason before he heads out and after everyone is safe.
  • Tempting Fate:
Goldar: Red Ranger can't save you this time.
    Jason: [arriving] Think again, Goldar!
  • Tranquil Fury: Jason during his battle with Pipe Brain.
  • Underestimating Badassery: "You disappoint me, Red Ranger. I thought you'd be tougher."
  • We Will Meet Again: After Jason escapes back through the portal.
Goldar: My life is dedicated to destroying you!
  • Wham Shot: Zedd revealing he has candles matching Kimberly, Zack, Billy, and Trini's colors.
  • You Did Everything You Could: As Jason stews over his regret over not getting the Green Candle, Zack reminds him he did everything he could, given the full situation and how Tommy's life was in danger. Zordon and Alpha later tell Jason he made the right choice saving Tommy.
