Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S1E19 Green With Evil Part 3: The Rescue

Go To

Goldar relishes his apparent victory, taunting Jason further as he prepares to stab him on the ground. Jason takes advantage of this and dives away, hiding in the mist. A frustrated Goldar stalks around the prison and stabs the floor repeatedly, reminding him he can't hide forever. Rita proclaims that it's time to summon an old friend, Scorpina, to make mincemeat out of the Power Geeks. She does just that with a spell. An organic boulder rolls through the Earth and breaks apart to reveal the beautiful but deadly Scorpina. Alpha tries to vector the generator's power to rescue Zordon, but his signal is rapidly fading. Zack rationalises that Zordon probably knows more than they do about the Green Ranger, but Alpha is also still unable to locate Jason. The Rangers decide to split up and search for him. Goldar happens upon Jason on the ground, although he can't see him through the mist, and he barely moves his head out of the way of a stab. Goldar walks away and warns him that he's only prolonging the inevitable, offering to be merciful to him if Jason surrenders.

Jason suddenly leaps to his feet. With a roaring kiyai, he attacks Goldar with a flying dropkick. Goldar staggers back to standing and gloats that no human has ever bested him, and Jason promises to change that. But after an exchange of kicks, Jason is knocked back down. At the Youth Center, Ernie shares Kimberly's concern about her missing friend, but the class clowns interrupt and offer to help her find him if she gives them a kiss. To everyone's surprise, Kim agrees. But as Skull leans in for it, she moves away and he accidentally plants it on Bulk's cheek instead. Bulk chases him off in anger and Kim bumps into Tommy. Tommy tells her that he and Jason were due to meet up after school, but Jason never showed up. He mocks her about being worried again, weirding her out, and blanks Zack as he walks off. Zack says there's no sign of Jason, and they agree to ask Tommy again. Goldar figures Kim suspects something, and Rita peers at the two with her telescope. She sees them chasing after Tommy to question him again at the park. The Putties attack the pair, allowing Tommy to continue slinking off. They defeat them, but wonder why they didn't attack Tommy.

Goldar prepares to finish off Jason once and for all, refusing to offer him mercy. The Green Ranger teleports into the prison and tells him to stop, because Rita wants Tommy to have the privilege of executing Jason, and so Goldar leaves. Jason and Tommy circle each other, with Jason declaring that Rita is evil and Tommy should not take her as his empress. Tommy says he's evil too, and the pair fight. Knocking Jason to the ground again, he laughs that soon the Power Rangers will be nothing but a memory. At the Command Center, Alpha calculates that he should have contact with Zordon in 15 minutes, and Billy fixes the communicators, which will allow them to track down Jason and teleport him back. Jason fights back and the two exchange barbs again. Falling to the ground, Jason finally grabs his Power Morpher back, but Tommy stamps his arm down to restrain him. Locking down Jason, the team finally teleport him out just before Tommy can kill him with the Sword of Darkness. In frustration at the escape, Tommy begs Goldar for another chance to prove his worth, but Goldar leaves him there for now as punishment.

Jason catches the team up on what happened, and find that Tommy's story doesn't agree with his version of events, but still don't realise just who he is. The alarms sound and in the Viewing Globe, they see Scorpina attacking the city's warehouse section. Alpha sends them out to confront her, but warns them of her fatal stinger. Morphed, the team attack her, but she sends the Putties after them. Goldar worries that she is outnumbered, and eventually recalls her to her displeasure. The heavy hitter mooks argue over who should attack the Rangers next, and Rita decides on Goldar. She begins to devise a solar eclipsing spell to deprive the Megazord of the sun's rays and neutralise it. Tommy practices kata in the prison, and can't wait to fight again. The Rangers note Rita's pattern so far of hit and run attacks, and suspect she's holding back for a bigger battle. Alpha finds Zordon again, but his speech is still clipped. The signal gets lost like a bad radio reception as the Command Center's power wildly fluctuates. Rita grows Goldar and he attacks the city to lure out the Rangers. They suspect a trap, but there's no choice but to respond...

Tropes

  • Battle Boomerang: Scorpina's sword is essentially a metal, razor sharp boomerang.
  • Dark Action Girl: Scorpina.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Squatt and Baboo reflecting on Scorpina's many atrocities, and her dangerous stinger weapon. They're also awed by her prowess in battle, however.
  • Informed Ability: Alpha 5, Squatt, and Baboo all speak of Scorpina's "evil sting" and how terrible it is. While yes, she is indeed a skilled and powerful opponent, she doesn't seem to have a notable stinging ability that would cause all who know about it to tremble. Perhaps they were speaking of the electrocuting sting her giant form uses against the Megazord in “Green With Evil Part IV”, but the way they speak about it, they seem to be implying it's something she can do at human size as well, which never happens.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Goldar to Jason.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Goldar scolds Tommy for letting Jason get away, since he wasted time gloating, giving the other Rangers a chance to find Jason and teleport him back to the Command Center. Later, when Scorpina fights and gains the upper hand against the Rangers, Goldar calls her back to the moon for no reason (except to prepare for a bigger fight).
  • Plot Hole: In one scene, Goldar has Jason at swordpoint. In another, he chats with Rita about the other Rangers. Then, he's back in the prison holding Jason at swordpoint again. Though he wasn't actually seen with Rita.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Scorpina appears to be inside a boulder (which is crawling with ordinary scorpions) when she first arrives. Whether she was trapped within the boulder and freed by Rita or it's simply some sort of form of transportation for her is never specified. Though it could be the latter, since she was briefly in that form again in the next part.
