Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S1E14 Foul Play in the Sky

Go To

Kimberly's uncle Steve is a pilot and has offered to take her flying in his light aircraft. Bulk and Skull blag their way on board by exaggerating their acquaintance with Kim up to friendship... ignoring her concerns that their weight will overburden the plane. Zack's crush Angela is introduced for the first time, but she dismisses his flirting. Rita commands her forces to sabotage the flight with a sleeping potion. As it turns out, Bulk and Skull are actually quite afraid of being up in the air. Kimberly reminisces about becoming a Power Ranger while flying over the mountains near the Command Centre. Suddenly the potion takes effect on Steve and he falls asleep at the controls, much to the panic of the bullies; they quickly faint themselves.

She can't wake Steve so she's forced to pilot it herself and with fuel dropping quickly. She calls Alpha on her communicator, who starts guiding her through the landing process. Meanwhile, Rita deploys the Snizard monster against the other four Rangers. It shoots snakes at them to hold them stationary and sap their strength. Kim's bow is necessary to defeat the Snizard, so she teleports over to provide support after landing the plane safely. Wiping out a bunch of Putties, she cuts down the snake bonds and snipes out Snizard's apple on his head, defeating him.

Marks the first appearance of Angela, Zack's crush.

Tropes

  • Adaptational Wimp: Doubles as Dies Differently in Adaptation. Snizzard's Zyurangers counterpart, Dora Ladon, survived his zapper apple being destroyed, the Wrecked Weapon resulting in him losing some of his power but still needing the howling cannon to finish him off. Here, the Power Blaster is not needed as Snizzard dies right away after his apple is destroyed. The Power Blaster footage from this episode would be used in season 2's "Opposites Attract".
  • Arrow Cam: Another example, as the Power Bow is instrumental in destroying the Snizard.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Kim when she's had enough of Bulk and Skull's freaking out.
Kimberly: "WILL YOU TWO BE QUIET, I'M TRYING TO THINK!"
  • Creator Cameo: Writer Douglas Sloan, who'd go on to be a producer from Season 3 through the first half of Power Rangers Turbo, plays Kim's Uncle Steve.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: A guy at the end is flirting with Kimberly who seems to be returning his advances. This was a mere two episodes before Tommy Oliver's introduction to the series and who would start out in a proper relationship with the Pink Ranger.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
Kimberly: (noticing Steve is ill) "Uncle Steve, are you alright?"
    Steve: "I'm feeling kinda dizzy."
    Bulk: (worried) "What'd he say?"
Skull: (assuringly) "Nothing, he's just feeling a little dizzy."
[A relieved Bulk nods in understanding, then they both scream.]
  • Faint in Shock: Bulk and Skull faint when they see that Steve has fallen asleep (though Skull sorta forced it). They faint again when they come to and realize Kimberly is flying the plane! It takes smelling salts to wake them up at the end of the episode.
  • Forgot About His Powers: The main threat of the episode aside from Snizard is that Kimberly is stuck in a plane with no pilot and must figure out how to safely land the plane herself with some assistance from Alpha on the radio. At no point do either of them remember that 1) Kimberly pilots the Pterodactyl Dinozord on a daily basisnote  or 2) that Alpha could teleport the plane to the ground/everyone out of the plane.note
  • Honorary Uncle: For Bulk and Skull anyway.
Steve: "Your friends are welcome to come."
    Kimberly: "But—!"
    Bulk: "Thanks, uncle!"
    Skull: "Yeah, uncle!"
Steve: "How about you guys just call me Steve."
    • After waking up, Bulk calls him Uncle Steve.
  • Insult Backfire: While watching the planes fly, Skull tells Bulk he has the "brain of a pilot" because Kaplan once called him an "airhead."
  • Monster of the Week: Snizard.
  • No-Sell: The Rangers shoot Snizard with their Blade Blasters, but he barely even budges and his apple crown reflects their beams back at them.
  • One-Woman Army: On reaching the battlefield, Kimberly faces a platoon of Putties. Not even flinching, she calls on her archery skills and mows them down left right and center. Then, just like two episodes prior, it's down to her to land the kill shot on the Monster of the Week.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent / Snakes Are Sinister / Sssssnake Talk: Snizard, of courssse.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Squatt spikes Uncle Steve's soda with a sleeping potion just before take off.
  • William Telling: A Shout-Out to the famous myth, with the Snizard monster having an apple on top of his head which serves as his weak point.
