"Down the Hatch" is the fifth season 2 short of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It's the 23rd to air on the Disney Channel and put up on Disney.com.
On a visit to a science museum, Mickey and Goofy are accidentally shrunken by a Shrink Ray. The matter gets complicated when Donald Duck ingests them both.
Tropes:
- Artistic License – Biology: So many aspects of biology are ignored in the name of the Rule of Funny.
- Berserk Button: When Donald learns that Mickey and Goofy are in his body, he is not happy with them, and proceeds to make life miserable for them.
- Burning with Anger: What happens to Donald when his Berserk Button is pushed.
- The Cameo: Ludwig Von Drake appears as guide for the tour in the museum. Also, at the end, there is an appearance by Gyro Gearloose.
- Credits Gag: Donald sings the song "Miracles from Molecules" from the long-gone Disneyland attraction Adventure Thru Inner Space during the credits in place of the usual theme tune.
- Double-Meaning Title: The word "hatch" is this trope, at two separate times. The word "hatch" in the title is slang for drinking something down, which is what Donald does to Mickey and Goofy. The other kind of "hatch", as in "hatch an egg", is the way that Mickey and Goofy return after the egg in question is laid by Donald. In other words, the hatch is how they go in and they're "hatched" to come out.
- Egg-Laying Male: Donald, a male duck, lays an egg that's much bigger than him, containing Mickey and Goofy at the end.
- "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: Happens to Mickey and Goofy, albeit unintentionally.
- Incredible Shrinking Man: Mickey and Goofy.
- Innocently Insensitive: A variation: Mickey and Goofy are so excited over exploring Donald's body that they don't realize how much discomfort they're causing him. When Donald finds out, he gets very angry.
- Jaw Drop: Von Drake and the others in the group have this reaction when they see Mickey and Goofy hatch out of the egg laid by Donald.
- Mister Seahorse: Donald (a male duck) lays an egg.
- No OSHA Compliance: There is nothing preventing someone from walking under the shrink ray. There is also nothing to prevent someone from pressing the button that activates it.
- Oh, Crap!: Mickey and Goofy have this kind of reaction when the effects from being shrunk start wearing off while they're still inside Donald's body.
- Orifice Evacuation: Mickey and Goofy exit Donald's body when they enlarge by him laying a giant egg. Notably, his butt is now stretched out and floppy from this, and he collects it before running away from the scientists who wish to study him.
- Shout-Out: Several to Adventure Thru Inner Space culminating in Donald singing the song in the credits.
- Visual Pun: It happens that Mickey and Goofy are in Donald's cranial cavity when his Berserk Button is pushed. Inside his head, Donald's brain unleashes a literal brain-storm on Mickey and Goofy, complete with thunder and lightning.
- Vocal Dissonance: When Mickey and Goofy play with Donald's vocal cords, it causes Donald to sing like a rock star.
- Whole-Plot Reference: To the old Disneyland attraction, Adventure Thru Inner Space. Mickey even quotes some of the dialogue, and Donald quacks the theme song, "Miracles from Molecules" by the The Sherman Brothers during the credits.
