Recap / Mickey Mouse S1 E17 "Third Wheel"

Go To

"Third Wheel" is one of the season 1 shorts of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It's the 17th to both air on the Disney Channel and put up on Disney.com.

Mickey has taken Minnie Mouse to a restaurant for a romantic dinner only to run into Goofy, who keeps Comically Missing the Point over their dinner date.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Bi: Goofy misunderstands Mickey twice when he tries to tell him he and Minnie want to be alone for romance, and thinks they both want romance with him. He's happy to oblige in both cases.
  • Balloon Belly: Mickey and Minnie's final romantic location.
  • Big Eater: Goofy eats large quantities of food uncontrollably. He even eats Mickey and Minnie.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Mickey and Minnie got the alone time they wanted, but now they're stuck in Goofy's stomach.
  • The Cameo: Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow can be seen sitting at separate tables in the background throughout the whole short. Also, the canine stars of Lady and the Tramp make a brief appearance, about to do their Spaghetti Kiss, but Goofy ruins it.
  • Creator Cameo: The waiter who brings the food is voiced by Paul Rudish.
  • Exact Words: Goofy takes Mickey's every statement literally.
  • Furry Confusion: Goofy appears in the same scene as Lady and Tramp.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Goofy chides Mickey for talking loud as they are in a fancy restaurant. He them immediately places his feet in a chilled champagne bucket.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Goofy gets these as he suffers severe hunger issues, resulting in him eating everything in sight.
  • No Indoor Voice: Mickey is shushed several times by the other customers every time he shouts, which eventually culminates with Mickey saying "Oh, shush yourselves!" after he and Minnie scream at Goofy that they wanted to be alone.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Goofy decides to hang out with Mickey and Minnie, who want to spend their time together alone.
  • Rubber Orifice: Goofy literally unhinges his jaw to stretch his mouth all the way to the floor, allowing him to eat so much that he gets a Balloon Belly.
  • Running Gag: Throughout the short, the customers harshly shush at Mickey whenever he makes a noise. This finally comes to a halt when Mickey angrily told them to "shush themselves".
  • Selective Enforcement: The restaurant patrons regularly shush Mickey and Minnie's outbursts over Goofy but do nothing towards Goofy's much more rowdy behavior.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Considering that Mickey asked Minnie what couples do when they are alone before blowing out the candle and Goofy afterwards commenting that things are getting bouncy, it seems to be implying that Mickey and Minnie are making love after Goofy ate them.
    • A case can also be made for the suggestive winking done by Mickey and Minnie in the beginning of the short and Goofy saying that they could use some "intimacy" after tying them together with a spaghetti lasso.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The song "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can be heard at various times throughout the short as part of the score.
    • Goofy also calls the waiter "Garçon" when he gets a menu.
  • Third Wheel: Goofy ends up becoming this.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Goofy tries to make Mickey and Minnie's dinner more romantic, when he's only making it worse.
  • Wingding Eyes: Whenever Goofy is about to have a hunger-induced rampage, his eyes get red swirls in them.
