Recap / Mechamato S1 E2 "King of the Chill"

Go To

One early morning, Mr. Ah Beng opens up his store and is perplexed to slip on snow. An icy robot approaches him, complains how hot it is, and spews frosty air. At Amato's home, his mother cooks curry puffs, which MechaBot devours happily. As Amato and MechaBot discuss how robots can eat, Amato's dad tries to fix the fridge. Pian arrives and decides to wait in the garage until his friend is done with his breakfast, but his yelling alerts Amato. He finds Pian stuck in the crossfire of the Cone Konchos' fighting. MechaBot gets them to stop with a blaster shot to the roof.

Amato gets the Cone Konchos to explain themselves - they were fighting because, due to being unable to build while imprisoned, they become bored. To stop MechaBot from egging them into another fight, Amato sketches up a plan for the Cone Konchos to build, which they accept. Pian, Amato and MechaBot head to the beach by bike, but they slide on ice and crash into Mr. Gobi, who has become a talking ice popsicle. Mr. Ah Beng, who is similarly frozen on the ground, explains that a bad robot covered the whole area with ice and snow, and must be stopped.

Amato uses supplies (which Pian pays for) from Mr. Ah Beng's store to change his bike into the MechaSurfer, which can ride on ice. They pass by Deep, who's taken the opportunity to ice skate on the road. He points them to the robot who caused it, and a driver attempting to honk him out of the way gets frozen for it. MechaBot identifies him as Sejuku, and Amato tells him to stop freezing everything, to which he retaliates by shooting giant icicles at them. While they do land a hit that sends him backwards, Sejuku freezes them all over, and storms towards the river, aiming to freeze the whole town.

Deep thaws his friends with the help of extension cords and a pair of hairdryers taped together. Mara sends a phone call alerting them to Muhibbah Corner, where Sejuku is attacking. MechaBot is freed first and mechanises with Deep's "Double Heat Blasters" to hurry the process. They rush to the river and find Sejuku in the middle of it, making a snow angel atop the frozen water. Upon seeing the main group again, he uses surrounding ice to construct his larger form before he freezes the whole river. Mechamato goes into Ice Mode, iceboarding towards Sejuku. He forms an igloo around himself to block Mechamato's engine blasts, so the hero instead rides circles around him, and the ice he stands on falls under, defeating him.

The townsfolk enjoy ice-skating on the frozen river for the day, while Amato and Mara help thaw frozen boat riders with hair dryers. That evening, the Cone Konchos finish building Amato's plan and hand him the control button. To show them what it is that they built, Amato presses the button to activate electrified walls around the garage, making their prison more secure. Instead of adding Sejuku to the garage, however, Amato uses him to replace his old fridge. His father is initially pleased to have a new fridge before opening it, launching so much cold that it can be seen from outside.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blue Means Cold: Being on the forefront of receiving Sejuku's ice attacks, MechaBot's metal skin and tongue turn blue from the cold.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: A man being served shaved ice remarks "That's a lot of ice!". Then he's frozen over by Sejuku arriving by the river on his wintery rampage not a moment later.
  • Hover Board: Amato combines Pian's skateboard with some hairdryers for the rockets, allowing him to navigate the frozen terrain.
  • Humans Through Alien Eyes: Amato asks MechaBot, his space robot companion, how the latter is able to eat, to which he nonchalantly replies that humans feed their fridge everyday.
  • Say My Name: Amato's father yells out his son's name when he opens the new "fridge" (actually a robot with ice powers) and unwittingly releases a lot of freezing air.
  • Smoking Barrel Blowout: After Deep uses MechaBot's "Double Heat Blasters" form to thaw out Pian and Amato, he blows steam away from MechaBot's barrel.

Cone Koncho Translating

The Cone Konchos talk in Pokemon Speak, except for one of them who helps translate. However, the volume dissonance between how much the Konchos say and the meaning that comes from it is puzzling.

How well does it match the trope?
