Directed by Norio Tsuruta and based on a short story by Koji Suzuki. Jack Miller (Daniel Gillies) is an American lawyer in Tokyo who is deathly afraid of water and has recurring nightmares about the fatal drowning of his brother Sean when they were children. He's also in an affair with Yuri Saito (Yoshino Kimura), the wife of his colleague Eiji (Ryo Ishibashi). When Eiji invites Jack to a cruise on his yacht, he finds soon that Eiji knows about the affair, but that's not the biggest of his and Yuri's problems.

Tropes:

  • Alone with the Psycho: Subverted Trope. Eiji clearly planned to be alone and murder Jack and Yuri for having an affair, but he never gets the chance because the ghost kills him first. The ghost then deals with the couple at the same time, mostly.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Eiji is taken out of the story before he can be a problem and the ghost becomes the real antagonist.
  • Asshole Victim: Eiji is murdered by his wife's ghost, whom he murdered, while planning to murder his current wife and her lover.
  • Body Horror and Facial Horror: Eiji appears normally until he is outed as a ghost, then his arm falls off and his head appears caved in as it was by the ship's propeller when he died.
  • Closed Circle: The main characters are trapped in a boat at night, with a broken propeller and a dead radio.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Jack's undead brother wants to protect him from the vengeful ghost he stumbles upon later.
  • Demonic Possession: The ghost takes over Eiji's body after killing him.
  • Drowning Pit: Yuri is trapped in the yacht's bathroom as it fills with water.
  • Evil Laugh: The vengative ghost laughs as she closes in on the main characters near the end.
  • Foreign Correspondent: Jack is an American protagonist of a rather typical Japanese ghost story.
  • Ghostly Goals: Subverted Trope. The ghost belongs to Eiji's previous wife whom he murdered and is out for revenge, but as is typical in Japanese ghost stories, this revenge is blind and nobody is safe from her wrath. It is in fact unclear if she even recognizes Eiji.
  • Helping Hands: After Eiji's ghost drops his arm, the arm becomes animated and attacks the couple.
  • Jacob Marley Apparel: The ghosts have the appearance of their bodies some time after their death. The light around the woman even reflects as if she's underwater even while walking on the surface.
  • Prehensile Hair: One of the ghost's powers, as usual in Japanese horror.
  • The Radio Dies First: One of the first signs that something's wrong is that the yacht's radio stops working.
  • The Reveal: The vengeful female ghost was Eiji's first wife. He murdered her in that same spot of the sea, and she's been haunting it ever since.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: The ghost has this appearance.
  • This Was His True Form: Eiji appears cleaved in half when he is revealed as a ghost.
  • Translation Convention: Averted. The Japanese characters speak Japanese between themselves, and use English with Jack only.
  • Undead Child: The ghost of Jack's brother, Sean, appears as this.
  • Walk on Water: In the final scene, the ghost reveals that it can walk on water and doesn't need to move inside the ship as a result.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Even worse to Jack than dealing with a murderous ghost is that they are entirely surrounded by water and he's been afraid of it since his brother drowned.
  • Youkai: The most common version, a woman who was murdered and stalks the spot killing anyone who comes near.
