Recap / M*A*S*H S8 E24: Back Pay

Go To

Hawkeye is incensed after learning that doctors back in the US are charging exorbitant fees to the US Army for x-rays and other procedures, and vows to get what he is owed. Winchester is tasked with showing three Korean doctors around the hospital, but they might be educating him after his back goes out.

Attention, all hands! Captain Pierce is charging $4 apiece for the following tropes:

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Charles, who's been having back problems, bends over in post-op and suddenly howls in pain.
Hawkeye: What's the matter? What is it, your back again?
Charles: No, I'm picking radishes, you dumb behemoth!
  • Bilingual Backfire: Winchester is forced to show three Korean doctors around the hospital, and starts referring to them as "Larry, Curly and Moe." He claims they are revered philosophers. At the end of their visit, the lead one turns to Winchester and says "Not bad for three stooges, huh?"
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the Korean doctor mentions that the acupuncture treatment is over 3,000 years old, Winchester sarcastically responds, "Happy Birthday." The doctor responds, "Thank you."
  • Humble Pie: When Charles is cured of his back problems by the Korean doctors acupuncture, he effusively thanks them and apologizes for his previous arrogance.
  • Oh, Crap!: Charles's face when he sees the acupuncture needles that the Korean doctors are going to use to treat his back. He changes his tone after the treatment works.
  • Punny Name: The title of the episode has a double meaning: The first is literal in Hawkeye wanting to receive what he thinks the Army owes him. The second deals with Charles's back problems "paying" him for throwing it out.
  • Serious Business: Major Winchester spends most of his time with the South Koreans belittling them, but when they see an opened chest for the first time he is completely understanding of their awe at the complexity of the human body. It helps that when it comes to thoracic surgery, Winchester is the consummate professional.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Charles, being a Western-trained surgeon, is so used to seeing people's internal organs that he's a bit surprised when the Korean doctors react with awe while observing an operation (being Buddhists, they're forbidden from performing surgery because it would technically be causing harm).
