Recap / M*A*S*H S10 E16: Where There's a Will, There's a War

Go To

Attention, all hands! Captain Pierce has left us the following tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Hawkeye is getting ready to assault the visiting general for his callous attitude of putting himself above everyone else.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Hawkeye finally realizes what he should bequeath to B.J.: A list of names of all the people he worked on (and whose lives he helped save) to be given to his daughter.
  • Hurricane of Puns: In one of her rare moments of silliness, Margaret joins in on one of these when she and Hawkeye are taking inventory.
  • Jerkass: The general in Mulcahy's flashback who treated himself to gourmet meals that ended up holding up the entire kitchen and not allowing anyone in camp to eat until he was done.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: How Mulcahy destroys the general's dinner.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: B.J.'s reaction when he finds out Hawkeye had to go to the aid station because he was getting a haircut.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: How Mulcahy pulls off the above "accident", tucking the tablecloth into his pants like a napkin and then getting up, pulling the tablecloth with him.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Hawkeye leaves Winchester his bathrobe, since no matter the situation, Charles never loses his dignity, and "purple is the color of royalty."
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The fishing story Hawkeye relates to Col. Potter: He spent nearly an hour trying to reel the thing in, only for it to get away at the absolutely last moment.
  • Spotting the Thread: B.J. realizes Hawkeye's still alive when he recognizes his suture "fingerprint" on a soldier who came from the aid station.
  • Taught by Experience: The doctor at the aid station asks Hawkeye if he was able to finish his will. When Hawkeye asks how he knew he was writing a will, the doctor tells him he's far from the first person he's seen writing one out in their situation.
  • Voiceover Letter: Hawkeye narrates his will as he composes it.
