Recap / Marvel's Spider-Man S1 E4: "A Day in the Life"

Go To

Peter Parker has a normal day in the life. This being Peter Parker, said day involves a lot of bad luck. Professor Octavius is mad about him slacking off on an assignment (he was trying to create his spider-tracers), Gwen Stacy's uncle is rejected for a position in Horizon High due to alleged plagiarism, his friends are sour about how he keeps blowing them off, and he keeps failing to catch the cat burglar running around town.

To be fair, that last bit isn't the fault of regular Parker Luck; Black Cat has the ability to inflict bad luck on whoever she looks at. Which means that Spider-Man takes a lot of embarrassment before he realizes that Black Cat's power works on what she sees... which, with the aid of a mirror, can be herself. So Spider-Man finally catches a break, catches the Black Cat, and confiscates a vial of black liquid she'd stolen.

As Peter congratulates himself for a job well done, a student who'd given Raymond Warren a high-five in Peter's place comes to the nurse's office for a mysterious hand injury, and the black liquid Peter found begins to move on its own...

This episode contains examples of:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: Perhaps at its most egregious here. The close-ups of Black Cat starting up the car and hitting the gas in the dealership in particular stand out for looking low-poly and not even attempting to match styles with the 2D animation.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While Peter does manage to arrest Black Cat, he fails his school assignment much to the ire of Miles and Anya, it's heavily implied that Black Cat's going to escape getting arrested somehow, and Venom is now starting to come alive.
  • Boyish Short Hair: In addition to the outfit change she exhibits, Black Cat's hair is noticeably shorter than in any of her other appearances.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Black Cat steals a car from a show lot. Apparently, it never occurred to her that car dealerships don't fully fuel their cars in case precisely this happens.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Black Cat during the theft of the car in question. While this is partially due to Peter going after her, the same can't be said for the Dramatic Shattering she does when she actually jacks the car.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Hello, Venom!
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Not once is Black Cat ever referred to as Felicia, even in the credits.
  • Sequel Hook: Black Cat gets arrested, but is very much prepared to get out of this predicament. "How I Thwipped My Summer Vacation" confirms this, only for her to get incarcerated yet again very quickly.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Black Cat's superpower, signaled by her eyes becoming cat-like. Peter eventually beats her by turning it against her via a mirror.
