Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 72 Heres Martha

Go To

In the basement, T.D. and Truman argue over who should introduce the vocabulary, when Martha does, revealing that the words are about speaking. Then, in the Lorraines' living room, the Lorraines (except Jake) are wondering why Skits is rolling on his back on the floor. Daniel thinks of calling the vet, but Helen thinks of having Martha ask Skits why he is doing it. She does, and reveals that Skits used to have a rubber plum he did that with, and wants a new one.

When Helen buys one, taking the dogs with her, Alice enters with Polly. She says that Polly wants a seed stick, but Martha reveals that Polly was just imitating Alice when she said, "Seed stick" and actually wants a mirror. Outside the pet supplies shop, a man asks Martha why his dog Slappy is sad. Martha reveals that Slappy is sad because her ears droop in her food bowl, then the man, Mr. Hockey, reveals that he's a TV producer at a studio called All Fours and offers Helen and Martha to be on TV.

The next day, they show up at the studio with Danny, and Mr. Hockey reveals that he wants Martha to translate people's pets on the show so that their owners can solve problems. She helps a few pets and their owners, then her show becomes popular with the Lorraines and Helen's friends. That night, Martha worries that being famous will change things too much, but Helen assures her that she'll always love her.

The next day, Mr. Hockey reveals that no one's seen the show except the Lorraines and Helen's friends, so he makes changes to boost popularity and turns it into a crime show, which Martha dislikes. The next day, Martha goes to tell Mr. Hockey that he must revert the show back to the way it was or she'll quit, but he reveals that the ratings are still low. Thus, Martha's show is cancelled, but she doesn't mind; in fact she's glad.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • Martha is seen wearing a top hat, then later sunglasses, on her show.
    • Mr. Hockey's other shows have illustrations of a clam, ostrich, and sperm whale in sunglasses.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Zigzagged in that it's inconsistent whether the moral Martha and Skits learned in "There Goes the Neighbourhood" (not all cats are bad) stuck — first Martha rolls her eyes at a cat, but then she helps one... but then makes a quip about how "cats and trash go together". At the end of the episode, Martha dislikes a show about a kitten... but Skits is shown enjoying the same show.
  • Buffy Speak: Helen says that Skits's rolling is cute in a "Skitsy" way.
  • The Eeyore: Implied when Mr. Hockey says that Slappy is "even less happy than usual".
  • Loud Sleeper Gag: One dog who appeared on Martha's show had trouble sleeping because his owner "snore[s] like a foghorn factory".
  • No Animals Allowed: Downplayed. At the All Fours TV studio, they allow pets, but not monkeys or birds, since it's quadrupeds only.
  • Ostrich Head Hiding: One ostrich is shown with its head in a bucket of sand.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When T.D. asks who wouldn't want to watch Crime Scene Clam, Martha replies, "People who watch All Fours Television apparently."
  • Pun:
    • Upon realising that Martha is now famous, Truman asks her for her "paw-tograph".
    • When Martha's show is turned into a crime show, she makes a joke about it being "shear terror" if they don't find out who sheared the sheep.
  • You No Take Candle: Polly's squawks apparently translated to "me want a mirror".
