Art by Crash X Fusion: All right, tough guy. Let's dance!

Grom Night goes into overdrive as Amity fights for her love, Lilith remembers hers in bitterness, and a solution is brought to light.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Explanation: Eda's reasons for joining the Emperor's Coven are listed down below in Hidden Depths.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Boscha's older brother Boris used to call her "Cha-Ka".
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: It's implied that Perry fell victim to this.
  • Atrocious Alias: Amity calls Lilith (who's in the guest bedroom next door to her room) her "Aunt Linda" when Luz asks about the noise Lilith's making.
  • Asshole Victim: Lilith and Eda take immense pleasure in paying back Nicole without even knowing they did it together.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Upon learning Amity was fighting Grom, Eda, Julia, Willow, Skara, Boscha, Edric and Emira all let one out with everyone but Boscha being paired up when doing so.
  • Boots of Toughness: Along with Luz (as per canon):
    • Eda and Lilith also wore boots as part of their past Grom outfits, Eda's being black and Lilith's blue.
    • Viney also wears black boots with her dress.
  • Bridal Carry: Luz carries Amity away from Grom in her arms while riding Owlbert.
  • The Bus Came Back: Kitsuni makes her first reappearance since her debut in "Mischief Gathering".
  • Call-Back:
    • Grom takes the form of a few familiar faces.
      • When facing Amity, Grom takes the form of her muggers and the Inner Demon.
      • When facing Luz, it's the mob that attacked her, saying the things she heard in her prediction in "Here Comes the Tutor" and making it come true.
    • Remembering Raine's advice from "I'm Fine, Memories", Luz sings from the heart when she serenades Amity.
  • Call-Forward: During a flashback, Eda claims that Raine will be playing at a place called the Socket, which does happen 21 chapters from now in the present day.
  • The Cameo:
    • Gwendolyn and Dell Clawthorne both debut via flashback.
    • Jenny Porter (Perry's wife and Gus' mother) also appears in a Flashback Cut.
    • Emperor Belos is one of the forms Grom assumes when it faced Lilith in the past. It also takes this form when facing Amity.
    • Tiny Nose appears running through Bonesborough announcing Grom has been defeated.
    • The Shadowy Secret Expozers and the Weird sisters appear as the bands for Grom.
    • Kitsuni appears to question Anu Bist about Puck.
    • Hunter. For more info, see The Reveal further down.
    • Dolly appears, beginning her plan to sway Boscha into accepting her proposal.
    • Athena briefly appears to tell Nicole that Boscha needs a ride home and Luz beat Grom.
  • The Casanova: Played for Laughs. When Luz sees Gus attending the dance with Amelia instead of Cat, Eda refers to him as a little Don Juan.
Luz: ...We need to prevent that timeline from happening.
    Amity: Too late, it's inevitable.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Seeing Gus on a date with an older girl and hearing that Luz thought he would've gone with a different girl, Eda says "You think you know a guy", like Hunter did back in Chapter 28.
    • The Weird Sisters perform "Purple Rain" during their set.
  • Crush Blush:
    • Willow and Skara after complimenting each other's attires.
    • Luz and Amity due to the latter wrapping her arms around the former's waist on the way to the dance.
  • Curse Cut Short: After her gargoyle statue gets broken, Nicole begins to scream "motherf**ker" before the scene changes to Lilith watching the whole thing.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: The last song is set to the show's end credits theme.
  • Distant Prologue: The chapter begins 30 years ago on Eda and Lilith about to go to Grom with their dates.
  • Dope Slap: Luz flicks King's skull when he tells her "not to have too much fun" while spending the night at Amity's house.
  • Dramatic Drop: Nicole drops her teacup upon hearing that Luz won against Grom, thus ruining her plan.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • At Eda's Grom, someone offered Calypso a drink in a flask. Calypso denied it saying she didn't want a future drinking problem.
    • Amity hates lying to Luz about Lilith, but doesn't know she can tell her the truth now.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Eda and Lilith's parents, Gwendolyn and Dell Clawthorne, debut in the flashback at the beginning before their appearances in Season 2.
  • Face Your Fears: Naturally, facing the Fear Bringer requires being able to do this first.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Keep the scene between Perry and Jenny in mind. It'll be important in Book 2.
    • When Grom takes the form of Belos, it targets Amity's heart.
  • The Ghost: Slasher and Felicity Fox are both mentioned.
  • Garage Band: Implied for the Shadowy Secret Expozers, who play at Grom as a band.
  • Give Me a Sword: Luz lends Brucy to Amity so she can use him in her fight.
  • Given Name Reveal: Barcus' sister is revealed to be named Mewstic and Gus' mom is named Jenny.
  • Hammerspace Hair: Luz manages to easily hide Rocky in her hair.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Amity creates twin swords out of abomination goo when she and Luz face Grom together.
  • Hidden Depths: Eda admits in the past that the reason she wanted to join the Emperor's Coven is because she's afraid she and Lilith will fall out of touch if they're not together, meaning Lilith won't have time for her family.
  • His Story Repeats Itself: As Luz and Amity escape Grom, it grabs ahold of Luz and conjures up the mob from the slayground incident who advance on her to try and beat her...
  • I'm Not Afraid of You: However Luz knows the pain and fear she developed from the slayground incident will never leave her, but she refuses to let it define the person she is now, giving her the courage to face Grom.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Luz and Amity still face Grom together, defeat it and earn their crowns while Edric is still stood up.
  • Internal Reveal: The student body (everyone who didn't already know) learns of Luz and Amity being an item.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Amity is tired of being unable to tell Luz the truth regarding her deal with Lilith. If she knew she could now, she'd clearly do it in a heartbeat.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Nicole gets a double dose from the Clawthorne sisters for nominating Luz as Grom Queen: Lilith gives some coven guards an order to confiscate a fountain she won as fake evidence (the statue of which gets broken) and Eda and King spray paint the words "The Hieny House" on her home.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: When King announces his annoyance with Luz and Amity's flirting, Eda tells him to leave them be since they're happy.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: Amity when she faces Grom alongside Luz.
  • Little Sister Instinct: Eda shot a light blast at Grom to get it away from Lilith, then stepped into the arena to help.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Eda, Ms. Traveler, Willow, Skara, Boscha, Edric and Emira have a simultaneous moment of shock when they see Amity's fighting Grom instead of Luz.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Acts as the second half of "Enchanting Grom Fright".
  • Musical Episode: Just like the last chapter, this one has plenty of songs.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Although Eda meant well, she pretty much proved to her entire class of witches that she was stronger than Lilith when she defeated Grom in her place.
  • Out of Focus: Granted, they had prominence but several students aside from Luz and Amity were pushed to the background in this chapter including Willow, Gus (who still had his MCing role), Skara, the twins, Jerbo and Barcus. Viney at least had an reason: she spent most of the night chasing Puddles after he ran off chasing pixies. Cat and Simon are given an explanation next chapter.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Odalia makes an effort to try and comfort Lilith about Grom just as she did in the past.
    • Seeing Bo all alone, Mattholomule asks Elliot to dance with Celine before asking Bo to share a dance with him.
  • Point of Divergence: As previously mentioned, Gwen and Dell are introduced near the end of Season 1 instead of early to mid-Season 2. Plus, Emira's narrowly saved from being stood up at Grom at the last second and Gus' mom appears as opposed to never being mentioned.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Viney shouts "shit" after arriving late in a crash landing.
    • Nicole gives one after her gargoyle lawn statue is broken that is soon cut.
  • Quirky Girl, Quirky Tux: Luz, Eda, Skara and Amelia as per canon.
    • Flashbacks show Eda wore a red suit jacket with shoulder pads over her black dress with red leggings and black boots at her Grom, while Luz wears a full tuxedo complete with black pants rather than the tutu and tights from canon.
    • Raine sported a white suit with a red button shirt, red bowtie and red shoes.
  • The Reveal:
    • Gus' mom/Perry's wife has her name revealed and is shown to have attended Hexside.
    • Athena took Nicole's name when they were wed and her birth name is "Saltstar", meaning Simon is her nephew & he and Boscha are cousins.
    • Eda took on Grom for Lilith and beat it, which affirmed Lilith's fear that Eda was stronger than her.
    • Boscha's older brother, Boris, left home after an argument with their mothers.
    • Edric's secret boyfriend is Hunter, who fails to make it to Grom.
    • Dolly is serving someone, who communicates through her doll.
    • Amity's decided on her dream for when she joins the Emperor's Coven: to change the coven system so that it would be optional and other witches would be free to remain covenless if they wanted to, allowing them to choose what's ideal for them.
    • Puck promised a friend on her deathbed he'd try to do good.
  • Romantic Wingman: Jerbo acts as Barcus' "wing-witch" helping him ask the Cerberus sisters to dance.
  • Security Cling: Twice performed by Amity with Luz: first when having to hold onto Luz on the way to the dance and then when Luz jumps in to defend her from Grom.
  • Serenade Your Lover: Like the last chapter, Luz sings a song just for Amity when they're alone in her room.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: The Clawthorne kids (past and present), Amity, Willow and Skara exchange/receive these compliments.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Willow and Skara due to their going to grom together.
    • Barcus and the Cerberus sisters, the former asking the latter for a dance.
    • Mattholomule, although having a date, asks Bo to dance which she accepts.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sleep Cute: Luz and Amity's last scene is them falling asleep in each other's arms in Amity's bed.
  • Slipping a Mickey: The possibility of the food and drinks getting spiked is constantly brought up. It's even implied that Jenny gave Perry spiked punch at their Grom.
  • Song Parody: The first song is a confirmed one of "Grease is the Word" from Grease.
  • So Proud of You: Lilith has this moment upon learning what Amity plans to do when she joins the Emperor's Coven.
  • Spit Take: Boscha after hearing Amity would be fighting Grom.
  • Stalker Shot: Lilith listens in on Amity and Luz thanks to her room being right next door to her goddaughter's.
  • Stealth Pun: While holding back the Grom-mob, Luz swings Rocky at them. She's using a guitar like an axe.
  • The Stoner: A flashback shows Geist, Gilbert and Sully smoking during their Grom.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Luz keeps her hair up in one for the night.
  • Twirl of Love: Performed by Lumity during "Independent Together".
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Upon seeing Amity collapse when Grom becomes too much for her, Luz drops into the arena to protect her.
  • Wham Episode: Hunter is revealed to be Edric's boyfriend and Luz and Amity's relationship becomes public to the rest of the student body.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Edric's boyfriend is shown putting away his scroll and proceeds to look at his reflection... using his golden mask!
    • Amity removes Luz's bracelet and finds no scales on her arm.
  • Wham Line: Puck gives one as the last line of the chapter.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?:
    • Lilith was afraid she wasn't strong enough to join the Emperor's Coven and that Eda was stronger than her, thus she was afraid of remaining in her shadow. Eda unintentionally proved the second one right.
    • Along with her muggers and the Inner Demon, Amity is afraid of hurting Luz in any way as well as her mother and Lilith showing disappointment in her.
    • Luz apparently has a fear of dinosaurs along with her fear of reliving the Slayground incident.
