Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E14 "Nothing Lasts Forever"

Go To

God has come back to Earth, followed by Lucifer and Amenadiel's angelic brothers and sisters, in the lead up to his retirement. Lucifer tries to win his favor so he can become the new God. Chloe is worried about the implication of Lucifer's impending Godhood towards their relationship. Meanwhile, Ella continues to struggle with her inner darkness and seeming penchant to attract bad people towards her.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: Aquarium owner Elizabeth Newman accidentally stabbed chief operator Bruna Lorenzoni during a heated argument.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Remiel returns since the events of "Devil Is as Devil Does".
    • Penelope Decker makes her first appearance since all the way back in the Season 2 episode "Quid Pro Ho".
    • The Goddess, in Charlotte's form, also returns since the events of the Season 2 finale.
  • But Now I Must Go: God moves in with Goddess into her universe without having designated an heir.
  • Call-Back: God's "I am so proud of the man you have become" echoes God Johnson's words on the gurney from Season 2 "God Johnson"
  • Chekhov's Gun: Bruna's Fitbit, which her husband mentioned but wasn't on the arm they found. Ella digitally tracks it and finds it in a shark's stomach, which isn't particularly useful as evidence but Elizabeth's attempt to hide it is.
  • Dimensional Traveller: Gabriel, as the angel of messengers, can go to places considered off-limits, like Goddess's new universe.
  • Dramatic Irony: Even though it turns out Michael only made God think he was losing his power, God still chose to retire.
  • Gender Flip: The Archangel Gabriel is revealed to be a woman.
  • Go into the Light: God and Goddess go to her universe by entering a bright light behind Lux's stage curtain.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Bruna had to sell some of the exotic fish for money due to the aquarium's financial problems. When Elizabeth confronted Bruna about it, Bruna justified her actions this way while also calling Elizabeth out for ignoring the financial problems that she warned her about.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When the other angels are hesitant to accept the idea of Lucifer taking God's place, Luci points out that he actually has experience running a kingdom (Hell) for millennia, something that none of the other angels can directly refute.
  • Kick the Dog: Maze tries and fails to do this (by way of stabbing a puppy, only to be unable to force herself to do so) because she wants to have something that she feels more guilty about than abandoning Eve.
  • Married to the Job: Bruna was neglectful of her husband and kids. Most likely she was busy trying to save the aquarium.
  • The Mole: Gabriel is actually working as a spy for Michael, letting Lucifer believe that she sides with him so she can reassemble the pieces of the Flaming Sword.
  • The Needs of the Many: The many fish, in this case— Bruna was selling some of the aquarium's rare fish as Exotic Entrees so it could afford to stay open, which Lucifer outright describes as "sacrificing a few fish to save the many". Elizabeth considered this to be playing God— deciding which fish would live and which would die.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Goddess brings up how she never got to say goodbye to Amenadiel when she first left.
  • Noodle Incident: Following her visit to Goddess' universe, Gabriel describes it as "pretty cool. The centaurs freak me out, though."
  • One True Love: God's love was, is, and will always be Goddess.
  • Quitting to Get Married: Subverted. Chloe makes a decision to quit the LAPD so she can be with Lucifer— and help him protect the universe as assistant to God.
