Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E02 "Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!"

Go To

After spending thousands of years in Hell, Lucifer returns to Earth, but his friends sense that something is not right with him. In the meantime, he and Chloe investigate the murder of an astronaut.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • As Himself: Sharon Osbourne appears as herself, a celebrity guest in the Mars expedition program.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: In at least one regard, Michael is like Lucifer: When he tries his "deepest fear" trick, the answer he gets is completely not what he expected. In this case, the head of the entire Mars project admitting that he... hates outer space.
  • Charm Person: Michael possesses a similar gift to Lucifer in that he can coax out someone's true opinion on something. Instead of desires, however, he brings out someone's fears.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Though calling Maze "evil" is something of a stretch at this point. No matter how pissed Maze is at Lucifer and Chloe, she draws the line at letting Michael pull a Bed Trick on the latter and actively tries to stop it.
  • Evil Twin: Lucifer is revealed to have one, an angel called Michael. His angelic gift is even a twisted version of Lucifer's own.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Maze apparently makes one (once again) when Michael offers her to work with him to bring Lucifer down. However, since the plan involves betraying Chloe, Maze ultimately refuses.
  • Fanservice: "Lucifer", actually Michael, standing completely naked in front of his mirror. The audience is treated to a lingering shot of him from behind.
  • Foreshadowing: Lucifer standing naked before a mirror reciting his name and catchphrases may seem strange until it comes out that it's Michael practicing his accent.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Michael is jealous that other angels in Silver City adore Lucifer for doing what Michael sees as a punishment, namely retaking the throne of Hell.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag:
    • Michael has damaged, black-colored wings and speaks with an American accent, although he does adopt a fake RP English accent while attempting to fool everyone.
    • Michael only ever drinks clear liquids whereas Lucifer is a whiskey drinker.
    • While Lucifer talks with his hands and stands tall and confident, Michael draws into himself, his posture emphasizing his injured right side.
    • After realizing that he's been found out, Michael switches from Lucifer's suits to a simple pair of slacks and turtleneck sweater.
  • In Love with the Mark: Michael initially wants to toy around with Chloe's feelings and break her heart, but upon finding out that she is much more durable than she appears to be, he decides to make her attracted to him instead.
  • Imposter Exposing Test: Chloe shoots Michael in the leg, knowing that the real Lucifer will bleed. Sure enough, when Michael pulls his hand away, he is uninjured, proving Chloe's theory correct.
Chloe: Once, I shot Lucifer to prove he was the devil and now I'm shooting you to prove you're not.
  • Internal Reveal: Chloe finally learns that she was a miracle child and put in Lucifer's path by God, something that the audience already learned back in the season 2 episode "Quid Pro Ho".
  • Noodle Incident: Sharon Osbourne thanks Lucifer (unaware it's actually Michael) for "all the things you did for Ozzy".
Sharon: From one Prince of Darkness to another, right?
  • No-Sell: Unlike Lucifer, Michael is Nigh-Invulnerable even if Chloe is around. In fact, she specifically shoots him several times in the end to no effect, confirming her suspicions that he is not Lucifer.
  • Office Romance: The murderer was motivated to kill because she thought her lover, who is also a coworker, cheated on her with another coworker.
  • Out-of-Character Alert:
    • Chloe's first major clue that this is not Lucifer is when he tells Ella that he had to go to Florida to "take over the family business." Lucifer telling a flat-out lie that he brushes off as "Just a white lie" is enough to get her thinking.
    • Lucifer calling Chloe by her first name rather than "Detective" is another clue.
    • Lucifer takes notes during an interrogation, doesn't respond to easy jokes, gets rattled by Chloe going over the top as "bad cop," won't hit on a hot suspect, and doesn't do his "deepest desire" trick.
    • Lucifer not only being nice to him but not once calling him "Detective Douche" makes Dan suspicious.
    • The clincher is Chloe seeing Lucifer asking someone what their deepest fear is.
  • Spotting the Thread: Michael is not the best actor, and after all, Chloe is a detective. While she might not be able to figure out when someone is the Devil, she can certainly suspect that someone isn't who they claim to be. Especially when they're trying to impersonate someone that she's known and worked closely with for several years.
  • Spot the Impostor:
    • Despite Michael's best impersonation of Lucifer, basically everyone figures out his secret in the end. Even Dan, who is Locked Out of the Loop and doesn't know Lucifer's true nature, still senses that something is not right with him.
    • Among the clues to Chloe is how Lucifer seems to not recognize the tech billionaire, as he rarely forgets someone that he helped.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: Chloe and Amenadiel initially think that "Lucifer"'s change of personality is caused by him spending an eternity in Hell. The former even writes him off and forgives him after she saw him in bed with Maze, thinking that he is still trying to get his bearings. Of course, the truth is that he isn't Lucifer at all, which the two find out by the episode's end.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title comes from Michael's infuriated growling of Lucifer's name, as he relives his rage at Lucifer getting praised for going back to hell.
  • Villainous Crush: Michael initially merely wants to break Chloe to get back at Lucifer, but is gradually captivated by her and ends up wanting her for himself.
  • Wham Line: Lucifer suddenly dropping his accent to tell Maze "I'm not Lucifer."
  • Wham Shot: A tearful Linda looks at a photo of herself holding a baby that’s dated 1994.
