The two groups of survivors have a rocky first meeting.

Directed by Stephen Williams.

"What good would it be to kill you if we're both already dead?"
Sayid Jarrah

In flashbacks, Ana Lucia returns to her job as a police officer after being shot. The suspect who shot her is brought in, but she refuses to identify him and he is released. She later tracks him down and kills him, after revealing that she was pregnant when he shot her.

On the Island, an enraged Sayid tries to attack Ana Lucia for killing Shannon, but is stopped by Eko. Ana Lucia holds the other survivors at gunpoint, and forces Libby to tie Sayid up. Eko takes Sawyer to the survivors' camp against her will so he can be treated by Jack. Jack brings Sawyer into the Swan, where he manages to treat him with Kate's help. Eko tells Jack and Locke what happened to Shannon, and agrees to take Jack to Ana Lucia as long as he doesn't bring any guns.

After a conversation with Sayid, Ana Lucia decides to let him go, and gives him a chance to kill her, but he declines. The Tailies join the survivors camp, and loved ones are reunited: Michael with Vincent, Jin with Sun, and Rose with Bernard. Sayid brings Shannon's body back to camp, and Jack and Ana Lucia have an uneasy reunion.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Berserk Button: Child abuse is this for Ana Lucia, as she comes close to killing a man on a domestic violence call when she sees that he has a baby.
  • Big Damn Reunion: The Tailies finally make it to the Midsection survivors' camp. Jin and Sun are reunited as are Rose and Bernard.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The episode ends with Bernard and Jin reunited with their wives while Sayid takes Shannon's dead body back to camp.
  • Call-Back:
    • Jack, Kate, Hurley and Charlie play golf again.
    • Jack remembers Ana Lucia from their meeting at the airport in "Exodus, Part 2".
    • During his heart to heart with Ana Lucia, Sayid references how he tortured Sawyer in "Confidence Man".
  • Epic Fail: Jack's opening drive in his golf match with Kate goes about 100 yards too far, sailing over the trees and into the jungle.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: The flashbacks reveal that Ana Lucia was shot in the line of duty, and the incident caused her to miscarry.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ana Lucia has this expression as she looks over Shannon's body.
  • Revenge Before Reason: A running theme of the episode:
    • Ana Lucia arranges for the man who shot her and killed her unborn baby to be released from prison so she can hunt him down and kill him herself.
    • Sayid tries to kill Ana Lucia for accidentally killing Shannon, leading to the bulk of the episode's conflict as Ana Lucia ties him up and essentially holds the rest of the group hostage to ensure he doesn't kill her.
    • Eko manages to talk Jack down when he's on the verge of leading Michael on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Ana Lucia.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Libby, Eko and Bernard abandon Ana Lucia one by one as the fragility of her mental state becomes clear.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Ana Lucia shoots the man who shot her three times in the chest and three times in the head.
  • Voice of Reason: Libby acts as Ana Lucia's conscience for most of the episode, trying to convince her to let Sayid go before she goes Jumping Off the Slippery Slope.
