Recap / Leverage: Redemption S 2 E 8 "The Turkish Prisoner Job"

Go To

The team tries to help a man named Romero Delgado who has been framed by two crooked vice cops.

Tropes stolen in this job:

  • Dirty Cop: Kira Simone and Billy McShane are two vice cops who frame Romero for drug and weapon possession. They have done this to four other people in the past as part of a scheme headed by shady real estate developers who take the houses of the people Simone and McShane have framed.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: McShane isn't as sharp as Simone, but he's the one most suspicious of the team. Simone ignores all his warnings until it is too late.
  • Dumb Jock: McShane is the dumb one between himself and Simone, which is attributed to him having suffered many concussions while playing football.
  • Faking the Dead: Parker and Breanna are "shot" by Sophie's mob boss character, while Eliot and Romero are "eaten" at the alligator park.
  • Fatal Flaw: Sophie pegs Simone as a "problem solver" who has to tackle any challenge dangled in front of her. They hook Simone by providing her with a key that is supposedly a clue to the ten million and by the time she realizes she's been played, it is too late.
  • Greater-Scope Villain:
    • The Marks in this episode are two crooked cops who have framed the team's client and four other people. It is stated they are doing this under the orders of real estate developers who are trying to get their hands on the victims' houses, but these developers are never shown on-screen and their names are never stated.
    • Simone claims that she was a By-the-Book Cop until her old partner schooled her in planting evidence. Assuming that partner actually existed and Kira isn't lying, then their tactics led to Kira choosing to embrace being a Dirty Cop and recruiting her new partner into that mindset.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Billy does express some surprise and possible guilt over how the man he and Kira framed is a model citizen, but he never makes a full Faceā€“Heel Turn.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Team Leverage tricks Simone and McShane into breaking into what they think is the legendary stash house containing ten million dollars hidden by a bag man. This house turns out to be the home of Renee Fontenot, the prosecutor in charge of Romero's case. Up until this moment Fontenot was convinced of Romero's guilt because of the cops' track record, but catching them in the middle of committing a crime in her own house leads to her having them arrested and dropping all charges on Romero, as well as promising to look into their previous cases.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: In their quest to find the stash house, Simone and McShane let Eliot and Romero lead them to an alligator park that was abandoned after Hurricane Katrina left it flooded. Eliot and Romero are then "killed" by an alligator that turns out to be an animatronic created by Breanna.
  • Noodle Incident: McShane says he thinks he's met Eliot before, but we never learn how that happened.
  • Real After All: The legendary stash house turns out to be real. Breanna finds it and arranges for it to be sold to Romero.
  • Sinister Shiv: The three prisoners who try to kill Romero all use these. One is made from a pen, another from a spoon and another from a tooth brush.
  • Sins of the Father: Romero's brother was the leader of the Latin Kings gang. This leads to his brother's enemies trying to kill him when he goes to jail.
  • Urban Legend: After their initial con fails, the team regroups with a new con to take down Simone and McShane. This involves tricking the crooked cops into believing Eliot, Breanna and Parker have found clues to a stash house rumored to contain ten million dollars. The legend turns out to be true, and in the end Team Leverage gives Romero the house, so the fortune becomes his.
