Go To

While Sara is busy on a date with Ava, the other Legends travel to 1717 to retrieve the Earth Totem from Blackbeard. Meanwhile, Rip tries to recruit Wally West's help.

Tropes

  • Actor Allusion: Ava is shocked that Sara can dance, Caity Lotz's career before going into acting.
  • All-Loving Hero: Even though she has clearly become a dangerous villain, Ray still feels terribly about leaving Nora to die, so he comes back and saves her.
  • Bad Liar: Ray, when he tries to cover up developing a cure for Nora towards Mick.
  • Battle Couple: Sara and Ava officially become one in this episode.
  • The Bermuda Triangle: Where most of the episode takes place. The Waverider breaks down by being in its presence.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Sara and Ava have one, which is interrupted by Blackbeard's crew boarding the Waverider.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mick is shocked to realize the legendary badass pirate Blackbeard is a coward at heart.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Darhk takes away Amaya's totem, which doesn't stop her from kicking ass. Ray seems to get it back at the end, except he's taken prisoner before he can return with it. While Amaya does manage to retrieve the earth totem, she doesn't appear to consider using it, as each totem has its own Chosen One.
  • Brutal Honesty: After Rip tells Wally how he burned his bridges, Wally replies that Rip is a "douche". To both their credits, Wally quickly tries to soften the blow, but Rip agrees with him and vows that he will find a way to make amends.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gary, yet again, who gets robbed by Wally (who also pantses him for some reason).
  • Call-Back:
    • Rip recounts to Wally the reasons neither the Legends nor Time Agents trust him anymore. Later, he has Wally retrieve his coat from the Time Bureau's archives.
    • Wally's recent breakup with Jesse is also mentioned.
  • Cargo Ship: Rip and his Badass Longcoat. He kisses it when he's reunited with it.
  • Cliffhanger: Ray is taken prisoner by the Darhks, who still have Amaya's Spirit totem.
  • Continuity Snarl:
    • Sara suddenly can dance, but during Season One, she told Rip she couldn't when they were undercover. Then again, she may have simply learned in the interim.
    • Apparently Wally is not a genius, despite being an engineering prodigy. Then again, this may be a case of self-deprecation on his part.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Sara and Ava vs. a group of armed pirates. Yeah, the pirates never stood a chance. Blackbeard's reaction as his crew is getting curb-stomped by two "lasses" is priceless. He then offers the two of them to join his crew.
  • Dirty Coward: Blackbeard is quick to do anything to save his own skin.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: When Ray offers Damien Darhk a cure for his nanite gun to save Nora in exchange for Amaya's totem back, Darhk tosses it over without a second thought; even Ray is surprised by this. Despite Damien's manipulations of Nora, he does love her.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Ray saves Nora's life and she immediately tries to kill him.
  • Gilligan Cut: Ava says fearfully that with a Time Courier, Rip could travel anywhere...and then we see him and Wally drunkenly singing karaoke in Tokyo in 1992.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Mick certainly thinks so once he hears that Sara is dating Ava.
  • The Golden Age of Piracy: The Legends visit it this episode in search of the Earth Totem.
  • Good Is Dumb: Ray goes by himself to save Nora. Damien even remarks how Ray "couldn't live with that guilt".
  • Hopeless Suitor: It seems like Gary has a crush on Ava. Naturally, the latter isn't interested.
  • How's Your British Accent?: For her role as "Dread Pirate Jiwe", Amaya adopts a British accent. Her actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers is British. On the other hand, while Amaya normally speaks with an American accent, she's originally from Zambesi.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Nora recognizes Ray, but still attacks him.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Blackbeard is so incompetent and easy to scare that you downright pity him.
  • Insistent Terminology: Anytime one of the Legends refers to where they are as the "The Bermuda Triangle", Nate corrects them with "The Devil's Triangle."
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Blackbeard had to kill his pirate lover when the Earth Totem took control of her.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Rip lampshades how people who have trouble fitting in have a habit of ending up on the Waverider.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ray is horrified when he sees how his nanite gun is killing Nora.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Ray goes back to cure Nora from the nanite gun's effects, and ends up taken prisoner for his trouble.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Gary's reaction to being pantsed.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: The earth totem reanimates the body of Blackbeard's girlfriend, after he put a bullet in her head. She's finally put down by Darhk's magic.
  • Paradox Person: Amaya laments on how she can't really change or interact with anything without being in danger of causing a temporal paradox, which might affect both her granddaughters.
  • Pirate Girl: Amaya pretends to be the "Dread Pirate Jiwe", to the point where legends of her end up changing a brand of rum. Blackbeard even refers to her as the "Pirate Queen".
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Damian stops Nora from killing Ray not out of gratitude for him saving her life but so they could use him to get to the fire totem.
  • Relationship Upgrade:
    • Mari had one with Macalester off-screen.
    • Ava and Sara get together.
  • Ripple Effect Indicator: Captain Godfree-brand rum becomes Captain Jiwe, after Amaya's pirate persona. Both Sara and Ava lets it slide.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Both Ava and Sara compliment each other on how good they look in their respective dresses.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Legends introduce Amaya as the "Dread Pirate Jiwe".
    • This exchange between Wally and Rip:
Wally: Right now, I'm living my life one quarter mile at a time.
Rip: Is that a Buddhist koan?
Wally: Dom Toretto, The Fast and the Furious.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Ava gives one to Sara after a short argument.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Damien is nearly frantic and in tears when it looks like Nora is about to die in his arms.
  • Take That!: The show's crew clearly takes issue with how shabbily Wally was treated over on The Flash this season.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Pretty much exaggerated for comedic effect throughout the episode.
  • Treasure Map: Darhk threatens Blackbeard into drawing one for him so he can find the location of the Earth Totem.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Just after Ray comes back and gives Nora the cure, the latter incapacitates him to take him prisoner.
