Tropes

  • Amnesiac Resonance-Dissonance: The Necromancer is not only Brought Down to Normal again but is given Laser-Guided Amnesia this time around; this actually leaves him a much pleasant person. After starting to realize the truth, he is horrified at the idea of becoming his old self again. The Amnesiac Resonance kicks in when he learns to use his magic again, even able to read his old grimoire.
  • The Determinator: Hope ends up being a Deconstruction of this as Cleo points out: she was so fixated on Landon that it came at the cost of being oblivious to any possible threats, ones that could take advantage of her obsession.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Cleo recognizing Leonardo da Vinci is the first clue she's far older than she's let on, and then taking the weapon from Alaric.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: To test Landon, Hope gives him a meal packed with avocados, which he's allergic to. His showing no ill health from the lunch proves to Hope this isn't really him.
  • Internal Reveal: Josie learns that Finch is a werewolf while her father learns that she took her magic back and decided to become involved with the supernatural again.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Cleo points out that Hope was so obsessed with getting Landon back that she was blind to any warning signs that her new friend was secretly the season's Big Bad.
    • When Alaric comes in and points his crossbow at the Malevolent Masked Man, he states that one of these days he'll actually kill something with it.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia:
    • The Necromancer suffers from this after escaping the prison world, becoming a funeral director living in Mystic Falls named Ted.
    • MG does this to Ethan after the later nearly kills himself to become a vampire, realizing that knowing about the supernatural is too dangerous. Its likely that this also erased any memory of their friendship.
  • Put on a Bus: Lizzie is left remorseful of her actions last episode and so decides to go to a "witch wellness retreat" to help with the issues of control that she's been trying to overcome.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Ted chooses a Heroic Sacrifice to allow Alaric to escape and help Hope, choosing to die as himself than become The Necromancer again.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Necromancer escaped the prison world: but whatever spell of method he used left him human (again) and this time with amnesia to boot. Thanks to Amnesiac Dissonance, he ends up sacrificing his life to help Alaric.
    • The "Landon" that we've been following is a magical golem made using the bust Hope made several episodes ago using his remains as part of the material. This leads to the revelation...
    • ...That Cleo is the season's Big Bad: she was released from the artifact after being trapped for centuries. Whatever her goals are, they involve killing Hope in order to activate her vampire side and become a full Tribrid.
    • The Malevolent Masked Man who has been stalking Hope and Golem!Landon is none other than Landon himself who is very much alive.
  • She's Back: Josie fully commits to being part of the supernatural again, helping her father find the Necromancer, and decides to return to the Salvatore School, convincing Finch to come with her.
  • Title Drop: Golem!Landon says this as explains he was literally made to be the perfect boyfriend for Hope, being immortal amongst other things.
