Go To

Hope uses Cleo as bait to lure out a new monster, a banshee. They capture it, but questioning the monster proves difficult because of her scream, so Jed comes up with an idea to use himself as a conduit. The banshee tells them that if Cleo stays at the school, Landon will die. Cleo decides to leave but is kidnapped by the mysterious masked figure. Since it's full moon, Hope turns into a wolf to track her down and saves her, taking the figure's staff. After unlinking from the banshee, Jed tells Alaric that he knows the name of the woman possessed by the banshee. The Irish woman was abandoned by her husband and her clan after the English conscripted her son into the army. Alaric learns her son's fate and reveals to the woman that her son survived and had many children and grandchildren. The banshee vanishes, and the woman tells Alaric why Malivore wants Cleo before dying. It turns out that Cleo is a muse and has the power of inspiration, since Malivore wants to figure out a way to escape the prison world. At night, the masked figure sneaks into Landon and Hope's room and cuts off locks of their hair before leaving.

Meanwhile, Lizzie goes to Mystic Falls High in order to help Josie ask Finch out. Josie does that, but Finch tells her she can't do it that night. Josie assumes that Finch is already seeing someone and asks Lizzie to confirm. Lizzie learns that Finch is a werewolf. Since it's a full moon, Finch turns and attacks her, but MG and Ethan manage to knock Finch out. In order to keep Josie from the supernatural world, Lizzie lies that Finch is seeing someone else.

  • "Eureka!" Moment: Jed has one early on when he realizes how he can help the others interrogate the banshee without her scream killing everyone, while simultaneously putting himself back into their good graces. It's later revealed that this is Cleo's power as a muse, even though she doesn't realize it.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: After learning that Finch is a werewolf, Lizzie chooses to lie to Josie and tell her that Finch is seeing someone else, since Josie is trying to live a normal life.
  • Meet Cute: Lizzie uses the invisibility spell to get Josie to drop her books in the school hallway just as Finch is passing by, thus causing them to start picking them up together.
  • Our Banshees Are Louder: The banshee's scream is deafening and can kill with prolonged exposure.
  • The Reveal:
    • Cleo is a muse, the seventh daughter of the seventh witch. She inspires those around her. Jed and Alaric learn about it at around the same time. Malivore seems to want her to inspire it on how to escape the prison world.
    • Finch is a werewolf. And the reason she's cautious around Josie is because it's nearly full moon.
  • Truth Serum:
    • Cleo gives Jed the truth weed for his time as the Willing Channeler of the banshee to prevent her from outright lying.
    • She also mixes the weed into the tea she gives to Hope, so she can get an honest answer whether Hope would be happier if Cleo left the school. Hope answers with a Blunt "Yes".
  • Willing Channeler: Jed offers to allow his body to be used to channel the banshee. Since his throat can't produce its deafening screams, they can interrogate the monster freely. In addition, Cleo gives him the truth weed so the banshee can't lie (although she can omit things or refuse to answer).
  • Xanatos Gambit: Lizzie comes up with a complicated plan to get Josie and Finch together. She lays it all out, but Josie just decides to go ahead and ask Finch out directly. As she leaves, Dorian reveals that he knows that this was Lizzie's goal from the get-go.
