Tropes present in this episode

  • Bittersweet Ending: The guilty verdict for Dr. Merritt raping Olivet is set aside but more women come forward.
  • Creepy Physical: While examining Oliver, Dr. Merritt says several inappropriate things, then touches her in a manner that makes her angrily snap at him to stop. It gets worse the second time, when she realizes that he's drugged her and she passes out, unable to stop him from raping her.
  • Domestic Abuse: Apparently, Dr. Merritt abused his ex-wife:
Celia Walsh: Six blissful years of marriage that took ten years of therapy to forget.
    Cerreta: He abused you?
Celia Walsh: It's amazing what people put up with under the heading of 'love'."
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Danielle Melnick is like this, telling Stone not to go forward with prosecuting Dr. Merritt for Diane Perkins' rape because (a) she claims his case is nowhere near as strong as it was with Dr. Olivet, and (b) she'll bring him up on charges for malicious prosecution. Of course, she has no idea what Stone has in store for her, and is stunned when Robinette shows her the files of all of Dr. Merritt's victims.
  • Foreshadowing: In her first meeting with Stone for the trial involving Dr. Olivet, Danielle Melnick mentions she got the judge to agree to a closed trial, so no press would be allowed in the courtroom. This becomes important when Stone decides to retry Dr. Merritt for raping Diane Perkins.
  • It's All My Fault: Olivet blames herself for Diane Perkins's assault because she was the one who recommended Dr. Merritt.
  • Obscene OB-GYN: Dr. Alexander J. Merritt has sexually abused several of his obstetrics and gynecology patients, including Olivet. Fifty-four survivors of his abuse come forward after he makes a public statement claiming he helps his patients and doesn't hurt them.
  • Smug Snake: Olivet describes Dr. Merritt as being this, both while he was raping her and after the judge set aside the verdict. When Stone hears this, this gives him the idea of making sure the local news covers the arraignment so more people will come forward.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Melnick keeps saying "Ms." Olivet while Stone plays it straight and refers to Olivet by her proper title.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Stone chastises Olivet for going back to the doctor's office on her own to seek evidence, as well as not telling him she did so because Diane Perkins was her patient.
