Recap / Law And Order S 23 E 1 Freedom Of Expression

Go To

When the Jewish president of a college is brutally stabbed to death, the detectives' efforts to bring the killer to justice are complicated by the subsequent murder of a witness and the revelation that the killer's mentor may have manipulated him into committing the crime.

  • Asshole Victim: Chloe, who spends most of her screen time advocating against Israel (and may have helped Cam murder Alpert) is gunned down by Klein.
  • Downer Ending: Nasser is acquitted even as Cam is convicted, Chloe and Klein are both killed, and as the post-verdict fistfight demonstrates, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will continue to violently rage.
  • Hypocrite: Klein accuses Alpert of this, saying that Alpert claimed to support free speech but then fired Klein for stating that transgenderism isn't real.
  • Jerk Jock: Herlihy's lacrosse team hazed some of its newer members so badly that Alpert planned to fire Herlihy over it. Fortunately for Herlihy, he's able to provide an alibi so he doesn't go down for murder.
  • Malcolm Xerox: Jordan, the guy who the police pick up for having the killer's weapon in his possession, claims that he's only being investigated because he's black.
  • Patched Together from the Headlines: Based on the October 7th massacre in Israel, the subsequent criticisms of certain college presidents for failing to sufficiently condemn Hamas, and the Claudine Gay plagiarism scandal.
  • Put on a Bus: It's mentioned that Cosgrove left after saying something politically incorrect.
  • Suicide by Cop: How Klein dies.
