Recap / King of the Hill S6 E1: "Bobby Goes Nuts"

Go To

After Chane (literally) forces Bobby to eat dirt, Hank decides to teach him self-defense. Bobby ends up taking a woman's self-defense course, where he learns to defend himself by kicking guys in the groin, which he starts using to deal with other threats. Hank tries to teach Bobby boxing, only for Bobby to kick him in the groin.

Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: Not even Bobby's own father does anything to actually confront him being bullied. Hank himself insists Bobby take up boxing rather than speak with Chane's father.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Kahn makes Connie's sleepover guests sign a waiver, strictly enforcing a 9 p.m. curfew — specifically forbidding giggling, music, pillow fights, or any form of entertainment like TV or even non-electronic games — and making the guests pay for their breakfast the next morning. Then he ruins Bobby's dance, which was literally the only thing the girls were enjoying about the night, and pathetically fawns over Chane for "saving" the day by bullying Bobby. It's no wonder why none of the other girls are ever seen hanging out with Connie after this.
  • Art Shift: The first episode to be colored on computers, which would become permanent a couple seasons later.*
  • The Bully: Chane Wassonasong literally makes Bobby eat dirt, then further hassles him about it the next day.
  • Bully Hunter: With the exception of Hank, all the people Bobby kicked in the nuts were all bullies. Even Hank was in the process of popping Bobby in the face with boxing gloves on to encourage him to defend himself.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Even in the context of his sole means of "fighting," Bobby sucker punches Clark Peters in the nads mid-sentence.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Bobby's only strategy of defense is smashing people in the groin. It fails when Peggy finally has enough of him.
  • The Dreaded: Bobby becomes this after he starts kicking the bullies in the balls.
  • Female Groin Invincibility: Bobby kicks Peggy in the crotch, which does nothing to her. But in real life, women have reproductive organs with nerve endings too. And a hard enough kick in the area can hurt all the same as if it happened to a male. Bobby supposedly didn't have enough kicking power for Peggy, though Kahn claims she's bluffing. After Bobby's ego is deflated and he goes inside, she is seen hobbling after him, implying that she did feel something.
  • Finish Him!: A gleeful Kahn during Bobby and Peggy's fight. "She bluffing! Finish her!"
  • The Glasses Come Off: Peggy pulls off her glasses before she proceeds to teach her son a lesson.
  • Groin Attack: Bobby embraces this in self defense, though Hank tries to veer him away from this strategy. Keyword: "tries".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: First Hank grounds Bobby for kicking him in the nuts. Then, when he refuses to obey his punishment, exploiting Hank's injury, Peggy overpowers him and noogies him.
  • Mundane Utility: With Hank laid up on the couch, Bobby approaches with a large carton of ice cream, as well as an apology. Hank rejects the apology, but takes the ice cream... so he can ice his groin with it, handing Bobby back an older, meltier carton.
  • No-Sell: Peggy, after being kicked in the crotch by Bobby, doesn't even flinch. She's out of breath as she gloats in Bobby's face and walks back in the house with a limp, though, so she might have been bluffing to hide her pain.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Bobby kicks Peggy, his mother, in the groin after she takes away his Game Boy, she's still grinning. That makes Bobby realize that women don't have balls, and also that he is pretty much doomed.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "THAT'S MY PURSE! I don't know you!"
  • Power Perversion Potential: Joseph steals Dale's thermal goggles so he can ogle the girls' slumber party... or at least their body heat. He ends up drooling over Bobby, who'd taken his shirt off and started dancing.
  • Screaming Warrior: The women's self-defense class encourages yelling at the top of your lungs before striking back, both to draw attention to the attack and to psyche up the defender. Bobby starts punctuating every kick with the aforementioned Battle Cry.
  • Slumber Party: Connie is hosting one, which indirectly leads to the bullying incident that sends Bobby to self-defense class.
  • Violently Protective Wife: Peggy is quite protective of Hank and she makes it clear to Bobby that she will not tolerate him disrespecting his father.
  • Wacky Fratboy Hijinx: Bobby and Joseph start out by watching Connie's slumber party. Joseph tries using infrared goggles to look at the girls' body heat signatures, while Bobby crashes the party by climbing through a window.
  • Wham Episode: This marks an important episode in the development of Bobby as a character, as after 13 years of having repressed his anger against his father, he lashes out at him in great force, and openly rebels against his strict disciplinarian ways. In this episode, Bobby Hill truly becomes an angst-filled teenager. The episode even ends with Hank and Bobby's relationship not fully mended, and at an all-time low point, which is the point of this episode in the first place. If King of the Hill was a feature film, this would be the end-of-Act-2 misunderstanding moment, or the lowest point of the main character arc.
  • Would Hit a Girl: During his fight with his mother, Bobby attempts a Groin Attack against Peggy. It’s not nearly as effective since she lacks testicles, rendering his attack useless. However, she is seen hobbling back into the house, implying that she's playing through the pain.
  • You Are Grounded!: Bobby is essentially this after kicking his father in the groin.
