Recap / King Of The Hill S 3 E 25 As Old As The Hills

Go To

Hank and Peggy celebrate their 20th anniversary and enter a mid-life crisis and to absolve this, go skydiving. Didi gets ready to have her and Cotton's baby.

Tropes:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Hank and Peggy get wasted off tequila, despairing in not being able to have any more children. Peggy attempts to throw away the baby stuff she intended to give to Didi and both she and Hank end up falling asleep in the trashcan.
  • Bad Date: A dinner date at a revolving restaurant proves to be disappointing for Hank and Peggy as it only revolves during lunch. Not helping is Peggy wanting to have some alcohol for the special occasion but deciding not to (being guilt-tripped by Hank), while Hank nevertheless decides to have a beer.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: During Hank and Peggy's slideshow, in the early days, they lived in an apartment and show a picture of a bed, which Peggy mentions was all they needed, to which Hank adds because it also folded into a couch.
  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Invoked when Didi is giving birth while Peggy plummeted to the ground in her possible demise. Subverted the next episode when Peggy is revealed to survive the fall.
  • Brick Joke: After getting a phone call that her camping trip was cancelled, Luanne tries to put on a happy face for Peggy and gets a can of gravy to save face. Then later as she gets in the taxi and says goodbye before going away, she mentions she has the can of gravy. And later on, when she sneaks back in the house, she gives Ladybird the can of gravy to quiet her down.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Didi giving birth to her baby and seeing Hank's horrified reaction after Peggy falls to the ground without her parachute deploying.
  • Closet Shuffle: While keeping hidden from Hank and Peggy during their weekend together, Luanne watches TV just as they come home from their dinner date. She manages to hide in the closet. And a little later, she gets her hair stuck on a hand vacuum. Fortunately for her, both Hank and Peggy are too drunk to notice.
  • Creepy Crows: A small group of crows fly off after Peggy hits the ground, being symbolism for something bad that just happened to her.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Kahn during the slideshow: "Slideshow longer than damn marriage".
  • Delivery Guy: Bobby serves as one while Cotton, unaware they're in Arlen, heads to the Houston hospital. Although he's quite reluctant to do so. Even the hospital staff think he's the father.
  • Directionless Driver: Bobby inevitably gets lost driving Didi to the hospital. She tells him to ask for directions, but he points out that he's not supposed to be driving in the first place.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Peggy does not look amused when Dale and Nancy give them the prank gift of canes and a little card saying "For when the Hills are over the hill". "Get it? Your last name's Hill."
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Inverted; after Bobby refuses to let Luanne join him on his trip with Cotton, Bobby claims he doesn't even know her name, to which she says Cotton does; she's "Missy Melons".
  • Failed a Spot Check: Unsurprisingly, the fact that Peggy gets a malfunctioning parachute completely flies over the heads of the instructors until she pulls both cords.
  • Face Your Fears: While initially too scared to jump, Peggy decides to after all after learning from Hank about how Didi is giving birth. She is initially thrilled, but her joy ends up short-lived.
  • Hey, You!: When Didi breaks her water, she yells for Bobby, referring to him as "Cotton's Grandson" which is rather odd since she knows Bobby's name and has used it before and after this episode.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Luanne has a camping trip planned, but it gets canceled due to a forest fire. She leaves via a taxi for appearance's sake, but later sneaks back in the Hill house and keeps her stay a secret from Hank and Peggy. She's seen when Hank throws some cups away in the trash underneath the sink where she's hiding, and closes the door without him noticing.
  • Hollywood Mid-Life Crisis: Seeing the slideshow depressed Peggy into tears, making her wish for something more fulfilling. Her malaise eventually spreads to Hank, whom at first was content with his life so far.
  • Hollywood Skydiving: Both Hank and Peggy go skydiving to bring some excitement for their marriage anniversary. While Hank lands successfully, Peggy isn't so lucky, what with her main cord and emergency cord failing.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Hank's idea of a good time to celebrate his 20th Anniversary with Peggy during their alone time on the weekend is him renting an R-rated movie: Platoon.
  • Instant Birth: Just Add Labor!: Subverted; Didi breaks water while Bobby's around, but manages to last long enough for Bobby to drive her from Houston to Arlen (about ninety miles).
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Peggy jumps out of the plane and screams in excitement. Then it cuts to Didi, screaming and giving birth.
  • It's All About Me: Kahn makes a toast for Hank and Peggy during their anniversary dinner, then turns it around to where he mentions him and Minh have been married 13 years and celebrated their latest anniversary by going bungee-jumping before making out in front of everyone.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Bobby stays with Cotton during Hank and Peggy's time alone, but this visit isn't all it's cracked up to be; due to Didi being unable to do much due to her about to be having her baby soon, Cotton uses Bobby to do chores around the house. His comments to Didi definitely hint he knows what kind of person Cotton is.
  • Kid Has a Point: Bobby makes an astute observation when Didi tries to convince him to ask for directions.
Bobby: I can't ask for directions, I'm not even supposed to be driving this car!
  • Kids Driving Cars: Bobby ends up having to drive Didi to the hospital himself all the way from Houston to Arlen when she gets ready to have her baby. The high volume of traffic, Didi in pain to the point where she can't navigate, and Bobby being unable to see past the steering wheel makes the situation even more stressful especially since the trip is over ninety miles.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode ends on an incredibly dark note, with Peggy falling and hitting the ground after her parachute failed to open and Hank's worried reaction. Then the credits appear to show a loop of Peggy happily falling while a cover of "Free Fallin'" by Deana Carter plays.
  • Nightmare Face: It's the first appearance of Cotton's war buddy Topsy, whose main quirk is inflating his cheeks up to scare people, which Cotton gets a kick out of. He does this to Bobby and the hospital clerk, the latter being a misunderstanding when Cotton wants to see his wife while she's giving birth.
  • Oh, Crap!: In quick succession during Peggy's fall:
    • The first is when the skydiving instructor tells her to pull the cord. But then she does without the chute deploying. The instructor franticly yells "YOUR EMERGENCY CORD!!!".
    • She tries the emergency cord and that fails too, then she frantically screams before hitting the ground hard.
    • And Hank's terrified reaction witnessing his wife falling, possibly to her death.
  • Self-Deprecation: While drunk, Hank laments to Peggy his regrets about having a narrow urethra and attempts to blow through a tiny straw to prove his point. And his comment about how he ran the 40 in 5.9 seconds note  but his fellows haven't reached the end zone in 12 years.
  • Wham Episode: Cotton and Didi's baby is given birth in the Arlen hospital. While at the same time, Peggy's two parachutes failed to deploy which caused her to fell to her possible death much to Hank's horror.
