Recap / King Of The Hill S 12 E 1 Suite Smell Of Excess

Go To

When the guys take Bobby to a University of Texas football game their hijinks land them in a VIP box suite, where Hank is mistaken for a former player of the opposing Nebraska Cornhuskers, and is asked to call a crucial play for the team. Meanwhile, Peggy shops for a new TV after breaking the old one.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: Peggy is initially against the idea of getting an HD TV because she thinks Luanne will keep walking into it by accident. Sure enough, when she's getting a replacement TV for the one she destroyed by throwing a remote against the screen hard enough to break it at the end of the episode, Luanne is trying to get the attention of a cat shown on an HD TV and asking if she can open the window and let it in.
  • Confirm Before Reveal: After Bobby leaves to buy a drink at the concession stand, Dale, watching the game through his binoculars because they're all seating in the last row of stadium, asks Hank if Bobby knows an oil tycoon or a Saudi prince. When Hank responds with a confused look on his face, Dale reveals he sees Bobby sitting in a luxury box by himself and Hank goes to the box to see why Bobby is there.
  • Driven to Suicide: Discussed with this line when they witness the Longhorns losing a game right at the end because of a seemingly stupid play Hank told their opponents to make:
Bobby: Is it okay that I feel like I don't wanna live anymore?
    Hank: Yes Bobby, that's normal.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Hank, who was watching the game from the luxury box is called upon to make a play for Nebraska. He makes a call so dumb that both he and his friends assume will get the Longhorns to victory. Unfortunately it does the exact opposite, much to the dismay of every Longhorns fan in the arena.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Peggy gets... rather emotional when it comes to watching Longhorns games, and when they lose, she destroys the TV after throwing the remote through the screen.
  • Recognition Failure: A group of Longhorns fans talk about who made the call, and just as it seems they figured out it was Hank, they instead target another random fan wearing the same kind of jersey Hank's currently wearing. The Texas fans only attack Hank and friends after they swap out their jerseys for Nebraska.
  • Retcon: Bobby is portrayed as completely ignorant of football, to the point Hank has to explain to him what a first down is, when in previous episodes he has attended football games and the Cowboys training camp, served as Tom Landry's mascot and even played the sport a few times himself.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Hank gives the Nebraska assistant coach the most fundamentally idiotic final play he can think of in quick kicking the ball to the Longhorns, effectively giving them a free turnover to win the game or at the very least forcing the Cornhuskers to put a single touch on the dead ball to also end the game, or just letting the ball stop. Unfortunately, a Texas player decides to dive at the dead ball and misses it, turning it back into a live ball that a Nebraska player easily scoops in for the winning score.
