Recap / Kim Possible S 3 E 5 Showdown at the Crooked D

Go To

Dr. James Possible does not receive an invitation to a reunion whereas all of his other friends from college did. However, he happens to be in the neighborhood anyway, paying a family visit to "Slim" Possible's ranch. It turns out that the reunion was actually Doctor Drakken's latest scheme: To destroy the intelligence of all of the world's leading scientists by having them put on his Silly Hats out of envy.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: It only takes Dr. Possible a short interaction with Professor Ramesh to piece together Drakken's entire plan.
  • Batty Lip Burbling: One of the effects of Drakken's Silly Hats is the victim will sometimes pause what they're doing in order to bat their lips with their finger.
  • Broken Pedestal: Joss starts out as being a Hero-Worshipper for Kim, admiring her and wanting to be just like her older cousin. Unfortunately, she overhears Kim talking about her to Wade, about how she thinks Joss should get a life, "preferably her own".
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: For once, Drakken is on the receiving end of this, when- thanks to Slim's remote- Old Tornado's magnetic hooves, attracting his belt, rip off his pants while breaking the door off the cell Ron and the Possible posse are trapped in.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cowboy Episode: As close as it can get in a kid-friendly show. Drakken's henchmen are dressed in a more Wild West fashion, Drakken himself is dressed in an unflattering western cowboy outfit, his henchmen and Shego use cowboy lingo (to Drakken's frustration, as he does not understand it), and the Possible posse is wearing cowboy hats as they ride robot horses into the Crooked D to free Ron and James, confronting Drakken's henchmen who are also riding on horseback.
  • Crippling the Competition: Dr. Drakken envies the intelligence of the world's leading scientists, so he invents Silly Hats for them to wear that make them act like doofuses. However, he simultaneously does not want to attract Kim Possible's attention, so he purposefully does not sent Dr. James Possible an invitation. Unfortunately for him, James is visiting his brother Slim at a ranch just nearby the town he chose for his plan, and he brought Kim and Ron with him.
  • Ignored Aesop: Kim tries to impart to Joss the Aesop of being yourself. However, in the end Joss instead becomes a Hero-Worshipper for Ron.
  • Irritation Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery: Kim's cousin Joss idolizes and imitates her.
  • It's All My Fault: Joss blames herself for getting everyone captured due to trying to copy Kim. James blame himself because he was obsessed over finding out why he wasn't invited to the reunion which turned out to be trap.
James:It's my fault for being such a nosey parker.
    Kim: Dad...
Ron: Kim, the man's a nosey parker.
    Kim: Ron!
    [James glares at Ron.]
  • Low Clearance: How Joss deals with two of Drakken's henchmen. She leads them around the structure of one of the buildings, only to pass underneath the store sign as the end because of her shorter height. The two henchmen, much taller than her, smack their faces right into the sign and fall off their horses.
  • Oh, Crap!: Kim, when she heard Joss gasped, meaning she heard Kim saying that she finds Joss annoying and too obsessive.
  • Pet Gets the Keys: Subverted, when Rufus tries to get the keys they just set off an alarm which alerts Drakken to the escape attempt
  • Phlebotinum-Induced Stupidity: The effect of Drakken's Silly Hats.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Drakken explicitly chose not to invite James Possible, in spite of their shared past and his own desire for revenge against him for mocking him in college, because he didn't want to attract Kim's attention to his scheme.
  • Series Continuity Error: The episode explicitly takes place during the summer, but it must after Kim and Ron's junior high school year (because it refers to one of their adventures that took place at the beginning of their junior year). However, it simultaneously can't take place during the summer between their junior and senior year, because following the events of Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama, Drakken and Shego are in prison and don't break out until during season four.
