Recap / Kamen Rider Drive Ep 33 Who Claimed Shinnosuke Tomaris Life

Go To

Written by Riku Sanjo
Directed by Satoshi Morota

After Shinnosuke is defeated, Freeze, Mach and Brain make their leave. While the public is informed of Shinnosuke's death, his colleagues from the Special Division mourn his body at the morgue, where they learned that by some reason, both the Shift Brace and Mr. Belt are attached to his body and can't be removed, while Kiriko remains at her apartment. Willing to at least rescue Go for his sister's sake, Chase obtains a sample of the antidote and invades the Roidmude's hideout but is stopped from using it on him by Freeze, who attacks in sequence. However, Go takes the opportunity to steal Brain's tablet computer and escapes with Chase. Once in a safe place, Go reveals that he had the same resistance to Freeze's brainwashing as Shinnosuke's and was pretending to be under his control all this time in order to spy on the Roidmudes and obtain the tablet, which contains crucial info on them, but blames himself for not protecting Shinnosuke in order to not expose his cover and believes that all his efforts were useless because of it, knowing that Kiriko is suffering with his death, but Chase insists for him to not give up, sharing with him what he learned about Shinnosuke's condition. After Chase leaves, Go opens the tablet, which was revealed to contain the memories of his late father, and asks for its help. Go later pays a visit to Kiriko and apologizes to her, giving her a small notebook he believes will help her revive Shinnosuke. Back at the Drive pit, Rinna informs the others that Shinnosuke's body is still preserved and that somehow Mr. Belt must be acting as a life support system for him, and has an idea of using the Shift Cars and Tridoron to revive Shinnosuke using the newly completed Shift Tridoron Shift Car and when Kiriko arrives with the formulas contained in the Notebook from Go, which Rinna uses to complete her calculations, Go's undercover mission is revealed, and the others conclude that Mister X was none other than Go himself. However, for the plan to work, Tridoron, containing Shinnosuke, must be accelerated to 200 Km/h and Kiriko offers herself to pilot it. The members of the division then relocate to a long roadtrack, where Kiriko starts driving Tridoron with Shinnosuke inside, but Freeze appears to interfere. Kamen Rider Chaser confronts Freeze, but fails to prevent him from stopping Tridoron. However, the experiment is a success and a revived Shinnosuke emerges, with Mr. Belt's consciousness now fused with his, and able to briefly take over his body as well, and transforms into Kamen Rider Drive Type Tridoron, defeating the enemy with certain ease. Shinnosuke then rejoices with the others, certain that he finally managed to avenge his father, but before perishing, Freeze reveals that he was not the one responsible for Eisuke Tomari's death, and affirms that Shinnosuke will fall into despair upon knowing all the truth.

  • Accidental Truth: Chase previously falsely assured Kiriko that Gou wasn't brainwashed by Freeze. It's shown in this episode that Gou was immune to his effects all along.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: Heart is impressed with Freeze's Ultimate Evolution, but also furious that Freeze killed Shinnosuke (Heart having realised Shinnosuke was the key to his own Ultimate Evolution). He actually sounds the most irritated we've ever seen him towards another Roidmude.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Just when Chase was about to use anti-memory alteration spray on Gou, Freeze shoots him in the hand and shatters it. Not that Gou needed it in the first place.
  • Curbstomp Battle:
    • Chaser Vs Freeze was completely one-sided in favor of the vile Roidmude. However, Freeze admits that Chaser was holding out far better than Drive did, since as a Roidmude Chase is somewhat resistant to Freeze's powers.
    • Freeze got hit with what might be the best example of this trope yet at the climax of the episode. Not only did nothing he tried work, or even HIT (the one thing he did manage to do was knock his opponent out of the air), but he got his ass kicked by two people in one body.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The coroner notes that he can't remove Mr. Belt or the Signal Brace from Shinnosuke's body. It's because Mr. Belt essentially turned himself into a life support for his partner at the last minute.
  • Darkest Hour: Thus far for the Special Crimes Unit and Kiriko personally, as not only is her younger brother apparently willingly helping the Roidmudes, but Shinnosuke was killed right in front of her. She spends part of the episode simply sitting in her apartment crying.
  • Desperation Attack: Shift Car Tridoron was intended to be this: a single, final attack, that would not only use all of the Shift Cars, but Tridoron as well.
  • Heroic BSoD: The entire SCU is hit by this hard after Drive's death.
  • Irony: Freeze developed the Hybrid Evolutions, where a Roidmude fuses with a human to create a far more powerful being. He's done in by Drive's new Type Tridoron form, which is a fusion of a human and a cybernetic being.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Chase feels that way when he admits to Rinna that he lied about Gou willingly helping Freeze and Brain. He takes a dose of the Freeze antidote to help Gou to at least lessen Kiriko's pain.
    • Gou's plan works, but because of it he was completely unable to help Shinnosuke when Freeze blasted him. It completely defeated the entire purpose of his becoming a Rider which was to protect Kiriko's happiness. Instead, it wound up breaking Kiriko's heart.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Type Tridoron only exists thanks to Freeze's plan to gain his Super Mode. If he hadn't attempted to get Gou on the Roidmude's side, he wouldn't have gotten Brain's tablet, and with it, Banno's notes to improve Shift Tridoron... among other things. And without THAT, Rinna and the others wouldn't have been able to revive Shin and Mr. Belt, which led to them fusing beyond what Krim intended, and thus helping to birth the form, which is ALSO his fault due to wanting to use Drive to reach his evolution. Even Krim notes that all this was unexpected and that he couldn't believe it. In one swoop, Freeze screwed the pooch royally.
  • Not Quite Dead: Everyone thought Kamen Rider Drive was gone for good taking a hit by Freeze Roidmude in one shot. However...
  • Only Mostly Dead: Shinnosuke turns out to be this, as Mr. Belt fused with him to act as a life support system in an act of desperation, preventing decomposition.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Captain Honganji shows this when Captain Nira tries to get him to select a new Kamen Rider. When Nira choses his words wrong, Honganji goes ballistic, intimidating the other captain completely.
  • Product Placement: Kyuu is seen playing with a small figurine of Drive while being depressed about Shinnosuke and Krim's deaths. This trinket, along with a tiny Tridoron, are a bonus item for those who will preorder tickets for Drive's summer movie.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Gou considers the result of his gambit this way - yes, he has gained Brain's tablet and with this, an extensive knowledge about the Roidmudes as well as his father's consciousness, but it all came at the cost of betraying Kiriko's trust and letting Shinnosuke die.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: A heroic example. When Mr. Belt is in control of Drive's body, his eyes turn red, evoking his "face" on the Drive Driver.
  • This Cannot Be!: Freeze can't comprehend on how not only Shinnosuke and Krim came back to life, both how easily they overpower him in Type Tridoron, even in his Super Form.
  • Wham Line: When Gou gets ahold of Brain's tablet, the symbol on the screen turns into a face. What comes next tops it, though.
Gou: I have some questions for you, Professor Banno.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: Just as when Shinnosuke finally avenged his father's death by finally defeating Freeze, Freeze's dying core rises to inform Shinnosuke that he has YET to know the real truth of his father's death and that said truth will choke him up.

The Roidmude Count: 56
The Answer: Nobody, since thanks to Rinna and all of Shinnosuke's friends both he and Krim are alive again...and can unite in Type Tridoron.
