Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E5 "AKA The Octopus"

Go To

Backed into a corner, Jessica's forced to share her intel on the killer. A groggy Trish tries to pull herself together before an important meeting.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When Jessica asks Oscar to make her a forged ID to get into Birch Psychiatric, Oscar is momentarily confused as to why she wants to be committed, forcing her to clarify that she needs to pose as a doctor.
    • Turns out the Ambiguously Evil moment Griffin had an episode earlier was just him covering up a surprise engagement party.
    • When Leslie's neighbour with her baby enters her house, it first seems like "Leslie" might actually murder the two.
  • Blatant Lies: Dave is clearly covering up for somebody. His story about how he murdered Luanne is clearly bogus, and he also clams up when Jessica suggests Dr. Karl told him to lie.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • David Kawecki, the janitor at IGH, is locked up in Birch Psychiatric, where Danny Rand and Ward Meachum were previously sent.
    • Detective Costa remembers the day Kilgrave took the precinct hostage, revealing he was one of those cops.
    • When Malcolm catches Inez as she's trying to pawn his TV off, he has to tell her that she'll have to go to a different pawnshop if she wants to pawn a hot TV, pointing out that he used to fence things there when he was a junkie.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It's even mentioned how "Leslie" didn't think the Frame-Up on Jessica through, with there being no evidence against her at all.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Averted. Detective Costa was in the precinct when Kilgrave came in, and he remembers holding a gun in his mouth on Kilgrave's orders. He remembers the nightmares afterward. He remembers those nightmares stopped when Jessica killed him.
  • Fall Guy: David Kawecki is taking the fall for Luanne's murder.
  • Fantastic Racism: Detective Sunday, who suspects Jessica and the killer working together merely because they are both powered people.
  • Hey, Wait!: The asylum guard that lets Jessica into the high security wing stops her for a moment, sounding like he's about to say he doesn't recognize her as someone who regularly works at the hospital. Then he tears the tag off Jessica's new lab coat and compliments it.
  • Hypocrite: While she might have a point, it is still glaring to hear Hogarth of all people tell Jessica how she alienates people.
  • Janitor Impersonation Infiltration: Jessica enters the asylum posing as a shrink, using a forged ID from Oscar.
  • It's All About Me: When she hears that an important news network wants a meeting with her, Trish completely forgets about Jessica being in jail. When said meeting turns out to actually be a surprise engagement party by Griffin, she realizes she never really loved him and just wanted to be as famous as him.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Dr. Karl recognizes Jessica at the aquarium. "Leslie" even more so, as she breaks the aquarium's glass for cover.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After being rightfully accused of alienating everyone around her, Jessica actually tries to be nice to Malcolm over the phone. The latter is quite flabbergasted.
  • Rage Breaking Point: "Leslie Hansen" destroys her piano in a fit of rage after listening to her neighbor's baby's cries for too long.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Ultimately, both of the detectives listen to what Jessica has to say, and Costa cuts her loose as he believes her and there is no real evidence against her.
  • Red Herring: It turns out Griffin hasn't been trying to steal Trish's story, he hasn't been working any with anyone, no scheme. He was planning a surprise engagement.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: The whole "octopus genes are completely different" thing was a big hit in the press a few years ago thanks to some far out cranks popularizing a bullshit theory about it. No surprise poor Dave picked up on it. Or Hollywood writers.
  • Shipper on Deck: Both Vito and Oscar's mother clearly want to see him and Jessica together.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Trish vomits in the toilet as a side effect of using Simpson's inhaler.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Malcolm when Inez hightails it from his apartment and steals his TV to pawn off for bus money.
