Victory

"A lightsaber—any weapon—only achieves worth in how it is wielded—in the effort, the struggle of the one who holds it."
Kreia

While sleeping, Jaune has another dream of the same mysterious warrior from before, this time seeing him in action during a battle between the Galactic Republic and the Mandalorians. Later, Jaune uses the techniques he saw Nihilus use in his dreams to defeat Cardin during a sparring match.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Adaptational Deviation: Rather than losing to Cardin during their sparring match, Jaune actually beats him using the Force.
  • Battle Cry: Right before the battle starts, Nihilus cries out "For the Republic! For Revan!" Before leading the charge. The Mandalorians in turn shout "For Mandalore! For glory!" before charging into battle as well.
  • Battle in the Rain: The battle between the Revanchists and the Mandalorians happens during a rainstorm.
  • Catapult Nightmare: When Pyrrha wakes Jaune up after seeing him thrash in his sleep, Jaune is so startled that he falls out of his bed.
  • Coup de GrĂ¢ce: After cutting off both arms of a Mandalorian warrior, Nihilus finishes her off with a single strike from his lightsaber while she's still stunned on her knees.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Thanks to a combination of his newfound Force-sensitivity and the fighting techniques that he learned by copying the man from his dreams, Jaune dominates most of his sparring match with Cardin, who is unable to land a single hit on him. The tables are briefly turned near the end of the match when Cardin knocks Jaune to the ground while he's distracted, but Jaune quickly regains the advantage and finishes him with a Force-Choke.
  • Double-Meaning Title: "Victory" refers to how Nihilus and the Revanchists defeat the Mandalorians during a battle in a flashback, but it could also reference how Jaune defeats Cardin during their sparring match.
  • Dreaming of Times Gone By: The chapter starts with Jaune having another dream showing a flashback from Nihilus's past. This time, he witnesses Nihilus leading an army of Jedi and Republic troopers against the Mandalorians in battle.
  • In the Back: In the flashback, when Nihilus is about to cut down a wounded Mandalorian in battle, he's shot in the back by another Mandalorian.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: After cutting off the arms of a Mandalorian warrior during the battle, Nihilus doesn't hesitate to kill her despite the Mandalorian being in a helpless state.
  • Literal Disarming: During the battle, Nihilus cuts both arms off of a female Mandalorian warrior who was attacking him.
  • Noodle Incident: While recapping his first week at Beacon, Jaune mentions how Nora somehow ended up getting stuck in a vending machine.
  • Off with His Head!: Nihilus kills one of his Mandalorian opponents this way, using his lightsaber to cut through the chink in their armor at the neck.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: When a Mandalorian shoots Nihilus In the Back with a blaster, Nihilus is only briefly incapacitated before and standing back up.
  • Psychic Strangle:
    • In the flashback, a then-Jedi Nihilus Force-chokes a Mandalorian warrior who attempted to stop him from executing one of their comrades during a battle.
    • Jaune Force-chokes Cardin during their sparring match. However, he quickly gets carried away and is forced to stop by Glynda, who resorts to using her telekinesis to throw Jaune against a wall and knock him out.
  • The Scream: At the end of the flashback, Nihilus lets out a shrill, soul-shattering war cry after killing some Mandalorians during a battle.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": In the flashback, Nihilus uses the Force to lift a pair of Mandalorians off the ground before abruptly slamming their bodies back into the ground at maximum speed. Jaune hears a crunching noise as both Mandalorians have most of the bones in their bodies snapped by the impact.
  • Spin to Deflect Stuff: During the flashback, a younger Nihilus twirls his lightsaber to deflect blaster bolts being shot at him by a trio of Mandalorians.
  • Stab the Sky: After killing a group of Mandalorians on the battlefield, Nihilus raises his lightsaber and points it at the sky while letting out a war cry to bask in the moment.
  • Stunned Silence: The entire class watching Jaune's sparring match with Cardin falls completely silent when they see Professor Goodwitch use her telekinesis to forcibly throw Jaune against a wall and knock him out when he doesn't stop Force-choking Cardin like she ordered.
  • This Is the Part Where...: As he's about to land the finishing blow during their sparring match, Cardin tells Jaune that this is the part where he loses.
  • Time Skip: The chapter picks up one week after "Initiation".
  • Viewer Species Confusion: In-universe example. While watching Nihilus's memories of a battle in his dreams, Jaune sees a Zabrak and a Twi'lek, two alien species from Star Wars, and mistakes them for a bull and squid Faunus.
