Satiation

"You... you are the darkness in which all life dies, milord. All life... exists to feed your power, and my life... my life is yours. I beg you... please... let me die..."
Visas Marr

As his hunger pangs grow, Jaune's emotions start spiraling out of control.

Tropes in this chapter include:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Jaune is furious with team RWBY for going after Roman Torchwick without asking JNPR for back-up because he's worried for the safety of his friends.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": This exchange between Nora and Jaune after he accidentally destroys the chairs he was practicing his telekinesis on in a moment of anger caused by his hunger.
Nora: You destroyed school property because you got hangry?
Jaune: I'm not hangry I'm just… ok yes maybe I am hangry.
  • Cast from Calories: Discussed. Nora theorizes that Jaune's powers require lots of energy to use, hence why he is feeling so hungry and hasn't gained any weight despite eating mountains of food.
  • Cat Scare: While walking through Beacon's gardens, Jaune starts Hearing Voices in his head. He is then interrupted by the sound of rustling in the nearby bush. When he investigates, he finds that the noise came from a harmless bunny.
  • Catch and Return: During their sparring match, Mercury fires off dozens of rockets at Jaune. Much to Mercury's shock, Jaune uses the Force to catch every single rocket mid-air and redirects them back at Mercury.
  • Combat Parkour: Both Jaune and Mercury make use of flips, jumps, and various other gymnastics maneuvers during their sparring match.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Nora encourages Jaune's barely controlled rage while fighting Mercury and doesn't understand why her teammates are disturbed by Jaune's insistence that he fight Mercury instead of Pyrrha.
    Pyrrha: Jaune, what happened there?
Nora: What happened!? I'll tell you what happened. Jaune put the beat down on that silver-haired schmuck like it was nobody's business! And you were so close to breaking his leg, you were this close.
Ren: Nora, I think what Pyrrha is asking is why Jaune chose to intervene, and not about the specifics of the fight.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Jaune expresses frustration towards RWBY for taking on Roman Torchwick and the White Fang without contacting JNPR for help, referencing the events of the Volume 2.
    • The lightsaber form that Jaune fights Mercury with is Juyo, also known as Form VII, a form favored by Darth Maul.
  • Death Glare: Jaune gives one to all the members of RWBY while calling them out for their recklessness during the Volume 1 finale. He also gives one to Mercury during their sparring match which the latter lampshades:
Mercury: Man that's quite the glare you got there blondie.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: While Jaune is right to be suspicious of Mercury and senses his malintent towards Pyrrha, Mercury hasn't actually done anything yet to harm Pyrrha. This doesn't stop Jaune from trying to decapitate the guy during what is supposed to be a sparring match.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mercury is creeped out by how possessive and controlling Jaune acts towards Pyrrha and finds it reminiscent of an abusive boyfriend trying to control every aspect of their partner's life. Emerald lampshades this trope by pointing out to Mercury that he's a deadly assassin.
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: Emerald raises her eyebrow in amusement when she learns that Mercury has standards despite being a hired killer.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Jaune expresses jealousy towards Neptune for being able to woo Weiss.
  • Hearing Voices: Nihilus's spirit speaks to Jaune for the first time, telling him that he must feed.
  • High-Speed Missile Dodge: Mercury uses his athletics and acrobatics to dodge the missiles that Jaune shoots at him.
  • Instant Expert: While fighting Mercury, Jaune suddenly displays a mastery of Form VII, a form of lightsaber combat, despite only witnessing lightsaber combat in his dreams.
  • Killed Offscreen: The rabbit's death isn't shown and we only see the moment before and after it dies.
  • Killing Intent: Jaune senses through the Force that Mercury has harmful intentions towards Pyrrha and insists that he fight Mercury for this very reason.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Mercury forfeits the sparring match after it becomes obvious to him that Jaune is barely in control of himself and is aiming to kill.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: During their sparring, Mercury fires dozens of rockets at once from his boot towards Jaune.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: An anti-heroic example with Jaune. While sparring with Mercury, Jaune doesn't crack jokes or hold back. He immediately hits Mercury with a telekinetic blast at the start of the match and generally fights with no restraint, aiming to take him down as quickly and effectively as possible.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: We never learn what happened during the period that Jaune was unconscious nor how he killed the rabbit despite being knocked out.
  • Off with His Head!: Attempted by Jaune during his sparring match with Mercury. Fueled by the Dark Side, Jaune attacks Mercury with a barrage of sword strikes at the start of their fight and quickly attempts to use his sword to cut through his neck. Mercury ducks just in time and counterattacks with a breakdancing L-kick.
  • Pose of Supplication: After returning to their dorm following the sparring match between Mercury and Jaune, Emerald and Mercury get on their hand and knees before Cinder in preparation to ask her for her forgiveness in botching Mercury's attempt to spar with Pyrrha. Cinder tells the two that there's no need for this since she already has footage of Pyrrha's other sparring matches which she intends to analyze later.
  • Power Incontinence: While meditating, Jaune's extreme hunger causes him to lose control of his emotions, leading him to accidentally crush the chairs that were orbiting his body.
  • Precision F-Strike: Jaune screams put "Why am I so fucking hungry?" while walking alone through Beacon's gardens, as the feeling of hunger has grown unbearable for him.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Jaune gives off a vicious smirk as he goes to his locker to get his sword for his sparring match with Mercury.
  • Sphere of Power: Jaune's connection to the Force has gotten so strong that he unconsciously lifts three chairs with the Force while meditating and has them orbit his body in a circle.
  • Tell Me How You Fight: Mercury is able to figure out that Jaune seemingly has two Semblances after noticing how he's able to dodge all his attacks as if he knows where they're going to hit in combination with his obvious telekinesis.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Jaune uses his telekinesis turn Mercury's missiles on him, Mercury mutters "Aww crapbaskets", before preparing to dodge the incoming volley.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Jaune is acting notably more possessive and controlling towards his friends, due to a combination of feeling extremely hungry and being subtly influenced by Nihilus's mask.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jaune criticizes the members of RWBY for taking on a dangerous criminal and a group of terrorists without contacting JNPR for back-up.
  • The Worf Effect: In order to show how much Jaune has improved in combat, he hands a Curb-Stomp Battle to Mercury during their sparring match.
  • Villain Has a Point: Mercury is absolutely correct in his claim that Jaune is emotionally unstable and is taking the sparring match too seriously. He's also right when he describes Jaune's behavior towards Pyrrha as being overly controlling and toxic.
  • Wham Shot: The final shot of the chapter shows Jaune waking up in Beacon's gardens after blacking out. His unbearable hunger has strangely disappeared. As Jaune walks away, the rabbit from before is revealed to be dead. All of its life was drained from its body, leaving a shriveled up corpse behind.
