Jane the Columnist

"It'll be different this time. We're different. We can make this work. We've grown so much. Please, Petra. Say yes."
Rafael

Jane is invited to write a column for Cosmopolitan, forcing her to rethink her relationship with Fabian. The police apprehend Chuck because they have reason to believe he is the J.P. Scott wrote about. Rafael comes clean about his feelings for Petra.

Tropes:

  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Fabian is apparently very well-endowed.
    Narrator: Hello, Mr. Big.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Rogelio complains about the way Fabian doesn't maintain continuity between shots, commenting that "audiences notice that kind of thing". Meanwhile, every time the camera cuts back to him, he's holding a different number of small dogs.
  • Madonna-Whore Complex: Comes up again in this episode, where Jane calls Fabian out for only seeing her as a "good" girl he could introduce to his grandmother. She calls it reductive, and after Fabian does some googling he comes to agree with her.
  • Meet the In-Laws: Fabian invites his grandmother over to have dinner with Jane (who, thinking it was only going to be the two of them, shows up in a skimpy dress and no underwear).
  • Scenery Censor: The side table and the cactus, for Fabian.
  • Shout-Out: To Sex and the City when Jane finds out she's to write a column; she imagines herself as Carrie Bradshaw in the opening traipsing through the city and later imagines Xo as Samantha, Alba as Miranda, and Rogelio as Charlotte (with his dog Salma Hayek standing in for Elizabeth Taylor).
  • The Talk: Mateo asks Jane how babies are made. Jane manages to sidestep it at first, but then the question of Mateo's unusual conception comes up. Jane and Rafael are later able to give him the kid-friendly version.
