Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 31 Tough Luck

Go To

While Jade is watching Uncle's shop, a guy walks in and sells her an emerald which bring bad luck to whoever holds it. Jackie takes it off Jade's hands to spare her while he returns it to Ireland. Meanwhile, Finn leaves the Dark Hand to start his own crime syndicate, with Chow and Ratso following him.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite two seasons worth of magic adventures, Jackie and Finn dismiss the emerald's curse as mere superstition until they become its victims themselves. Furthermore, it's said that Finn is Irish and had heard plenty about the curse throughout his life, but he still thought it was bunk, despite his various experiences on the show.
  • Bad Luck Charm: The Irish curse placed on the Emerald of Killarney brings endless amount of bad luck to whoever possesses it.
  • Bound and Gagged: The guy who gave Jade the emerald is met again bound and gagged in a chair by Finn who wants him to tell him where the emerald is.
  • Butt-Monkey: Jackie's usual bad luck is taken up to eleven thanks to the Emerald of Killarney. Later happens to Finn when he demands it from Jackie.
  • Cassandra Truth: Though the man who first had the emerald tells the Enforcers where he left it, he warns them about the curse, but they ignore his warning when Finn claims that as an Irish-American, he knows the curse is just a tale.
  • Catapult Nightmare: As Finn's dream ends with him being punched by Jackie, he bolts awake.
  • Clingy Macguffin: Not the Macguffin itself in this case, but its bad luck curse. While the emerald can be passed between people, the curse will not transfer with it if the person possessing the emerald doesn't willingly hand it over.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This is the first episode where Finn, Ratso and Chow are carrying out a scheme of their own and aren't acting in the name of the Arc Villains.
  • Demoted to Extra: Played for Laughs in Finn's dream; the Dark Hand Enforcers and a Shadowkhan are under Finn's leadership and impressing a crowd in a concert, but their boss Valmont is playing a cowbell in the background, while Shendu's just serving as a stage prop in his statue form.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • When Finn refuses to give up on the emerald despite Jackie having it, he claims that while Jackie was too much for the Dark Hand, the Enforcers are now a new team under his command. He fails to realize that even if they operate by themselves under a new name, they're still the same trio of nincompoops who've been beaten numerous times already, and they have nothing new to use against Jackie.
    • Jade dresses as a leprechaun and enters a pub to get information about Finn after he steals the emerald. She get the information she wanted, but a pub patron tells the others they can get the leprechaun's pot of gold. Cue the mob chasing after her and Jackie.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In Finn's dream, Jackie attacks him for playing off-key in a legal concert.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: The Enforcers could have saved themselves a new humiliating defeat from Jackie and Jade had Finn listened to Ratso's suggestion to steal some other emerald that's not anywhere near the Chans instead of letting pride get the better of him.
  • Eek, a Mouse!!: Finn's third applicant impresses him with his skill in swordsmanship, but then he screams upon seeing a mouse and runs away while the mouse itself runs after him.
  • Egocentric Team Naming: Finn spends the episode trying to make up a name for his gang, and all of his suggestions are his name combined with a name of a famous music band.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jackie refuses to simply hand the emerald over to Finn, not wanting anyone that would be sold the emerald to get hit with the curse.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: The second guy Finn interviews attempts to bite a log, but his dentures get stuck on it and come out.
  • From Bad to Worse: The curse is transferred if the emerald is given freely, but it remains with the given person (i.e. Jackie) if it is stolen, so he still struggles with bad luck while trying to stop Finn's gang.
  • Hope Spot: Jackie is disappointed over Finn stealing the emerald, but Jade says that the curse at least has been transferred to him instead. Then Uncle calls in to warn about pickpockets, saying his research has determined that the curse isn't transferred if the emerald is stolen.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: When Ratso and Chow offer their services, Finn excitedly says that is so cool, only to adopt a more detached demeanor mid-sentence.
  • I Warned You: The previous holder of the emerald and then Jackie warn Finn that he really doesn't want the emerald. It takes a while, but the warnings eventually bear out.
  • Ironic Echo: When Finn first declares that the emerald's curse is nonexistent, he says "Hey, I'm Irish, and every Irish dude knows that curse is a bunch of blarney." When he later tries to sic the mob of Irishmen on Jackie whom he just returned the emerald to, they call him ignorant and say that "every Irishmen knows that rock carries a curse".
  • Irony: Finn opts to start a new gang so that he doesn't have to deal with Jackie anymore, only to see the object he's after in the possession of Jackie.
  • Loud Gulp: Jackie, upon seeing the many ways the equipment in the potato factory could injure him.
  • Macguffin Escort Mission: The emerald's curse can only be broken if returned to its tomb in Ireland.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: The stone must be exchanged willingly between two individuals in order for the curse to pass. If it's stolen, the curse will remain with the last person affected.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Uncle calls Jackie to warn him about pickpockets as the curse only transfers if the owner gives the emerald willingly. If stolen, the curse remains with the previous person.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "Actually, I feel lucky."
  • Running Gag: Finn constantly changing the gang's name. He insists he's finally settled on one, as he, Chow, and Ratso are running away from angry Irishmen.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Start My Own: Finn decides to quit the Dark Hand and start his own crime syndicate in order to avoid running into Jackie anymore.
  • St. Patrick's Day Episode: It's St. Patrick's Day in Ireland when we get there. Since Jackie's not wearing anything green, he's pinched by anyone passing him. Jade avoids this because she's wearing green shoes.
  • Stuffed into a Trashcan: Once Finn has taken the emerald from Jackie, Ratso throws the latter in a dumpster and closes the lid. When Jackie emerges from the dumpster, the Enforcers are gone.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Stepping outside the shop with his various good luck charms, Jackie remarks things are going well so far. Chaos immediately ensues.
    • Lampshaded upon entering the potato factory. Jackie asks how it could possibly be dangerous in there, only to see all the sharp equipment around and nervously gulp.
    • In the last scene, Jackie says his luck is finally improving, only to see a black cat cross his path, break a mirror, and walk under a ladder. Jade reasons that's 80 years' worth of bad luck. As Jackie hopes those are just superstitions, he gets hit with a man's garbage.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage: Finn's recruits for his new crime syndicate. The first guy hits himself in the face with his nunchucks. The second guy tries to bite a log, only for his dentures to come out. The third guy slices hay stacks with a sword, only to run off when he sees a mouse.
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • Once Finn learns that the emerald he wants ended up with Jackie, the very man he wanted to stop running into, he rejects Ratso's suggestion to look for some other emerald to steal out of pride and blindly claims the odds against Jackie are different now that they no longer work for the Dark Hand.
    • Finn is insistent on claiming the emerald, despite having heard stories about the curse for much of his life. The assorted Irishmen that later confront him at the potato factory later highlight how this trope applies to him. They immediately don't want anything to do with the emerald, saying everyone in Ireland knows not to touch that thing.
