Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 16 The Lotus Temple

Go To

Jackie and Jade discovers the long lost Lotus Temple. However what they found would be more trouble than they ever thought.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • And I Must Scream: Xu Lin has spent god knows how long in that temple. The old monk that was accompanying Jackie suffer the same fate.
  • Bald Mystic: The evil monk is a cross between this and Bald of Evil due to being an Enlightened Antagonist who possesses Ki Manipulation, levitates in the lotus position, and frequently spouts proverbs, even during battle.
  • Barefoot Sage: The old monk goes around in sandals; Justified, as that's the usual appearance of Buddhist monks.
  • Breath Weapon: Xu Lin's monster form, that she got from visiting the temple has an extremely powerful Ice Breath.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Xu Lin has lived months (maybe even a couple years) trapped in the Lotus Temple, unable to see her family. By the end of the episode, she's happily reunited with her family.
    • Laser-Guided Karma: In turn, the old monk who intended to use Jackie as bait so he could steal the Lotus Temple's riches ends up trapped in the Lotus Temple. Nonetheless, it's clear that he somehow managed to escape it, since he makes an appearance in the later episode "Antler Action".
  • Enlightened Antagonist: Parodied with the old monk. He is a Buddhist monk with supernatural powers (including levitating in the lotus position) who speaks in cryptic proverbs, and nonetheless, he turns out to be the villain of the episode and a dark Chi sorcerer who is after the magical Scroll of Hung Chao.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Xu Lin starts transforming following Jackie entering the temple, she tells Jade to run and hide. Jade assures her she will be fine due to being a guest while saying that she will feel sorry for whoever the intruder is before realizing who it most likely is.
  • Heel Realization: Jade starts out in the episode exasperated at Jackie and Uncle. But after hearing poor Xu Lin's tragic story of being separated from her family because of the Lotus Temple, she realizes how good she has it to still be with her own family.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The evil monk paints a mystic inscription from a magic scroll on his hand in order to gain the scroll's power. During his fight against Jackie, the ink rubs off onto Jackie's palm during an arm lock, allowing Jackie to use the scroll's power himself to even the fight.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Jade figures that the guardian of the temple is only hostile against intruders; meaning that having someone be invited in would allow her to be safe from its wrath.
    • Jackie would notice that while the guardian can't leave the temple, anything else can pass through. He then has Xu Lin wear armor to help her fool the temple into letting her out.
  • Magical Barefooter: The old monk goes around in sandals (as Buddhist monks usually do), and possesses Chi powers.
  • Missing Child: Xu Lin's situation. She was trapped in the temple for a long time, all while her parents were unaware of what happened to her.
