Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 06 E 04 Macs Big Break

Go To

Charlie: This is probably like the biggest opportunity either of us have ever had in our lives, right?
Mac: We are not men who get a lot of opportunities, Charlie. The few we've had, we've squandered.

Mac finally gets his big break when he correctly answers a trivia question on the radio and wins the chance to take a shot from center ice at a Philadelphia Flyers game. Meanwhile, Dennis and Dee decide to try and profit by turning their banter into a podcast.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Cricket tells a disturbing story about a dog trying to mate with his neck wound when he's interviewed for Dennis and Dee's radio show.
  • Butt-Monkey: The Waitress ends up getting a bucket of dirty dishwater dumped on her head after Frank lures her to the bar under false pretenses.
  • Call-Back: Mac insists on wearing the duster for his center ice slapshot.
  • Catchphrase: Lampshaded when Charlie notices Mac's new habit of calling people "jabroni".
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Daydream Surprise: Mac skates out onto the ice, executes a perfect slapshot right through the styrofoam goalie and the crowd goes wild chanting his name... and then it's revealed that it's all been happening in his head, as he slipped and knocked himself unconscious as soon as he set foot on the ice.
  • Dead Air: Occurs during Dennis and Dee's podcast, prompting Frank to bring Cricket on as a guest.
  • Dumbass DJ: Dennis and Dee quickly devolve into this; they attempt to sound intelligent by discussing important topics such as the war, but it's clear that they have no clue what they're talking about and they keep getting derailed by Frank into conversations about Dee's sex life and getting distracted playing around with the sound effect buttons.
  • Epic Fail: Mac trips and falls on the ice before he can even take his shot, knocking himself out in the process. Charlie comments that it will definitely end up on ESPN. Oh and he smashes Dee and Dennis's demo tape in the process.
  • Every Man Has His Price: The Waitress agrees to drink soup out of Frank's shoe for five hundred dollars.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: Cricket reveals that he no longer believes in God after the Chinese stole his kidney.
  • Failures on Ice: Mac has no idea how to ice skate, and ends up flailing around like Bambi when he first attempts it. Despite Charlie's best efforts to teach him, he still falls flat on his face when he goes to take his shot.
  • Fantasy Sequence: Mac initially appears to make the shot, but the audience quickly discovers that he is fantasizing, having knocked himself out while attempting to skate on the ice.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Dennis, Dee and Frank are listening to the radio contest being announced at the beginning of the episode.
Dee: Who would want to spend a weekend at a beach house with these idiots?
(cut to Mac and Charlie in the back office desperately trying to get through on the phone lines)
  • Global Ignorance: Dennis is amazed to discover that America is embroiled in two wars, and asks whether either of them are on "US soil".
  • Hidden Depths: Charlie turns out to be surprisingly good at ice skating, and also has some PeeWee hockey skills under his belt.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Dennis's assertion that cell phone minutes don't matter anymore is this after BlackBerry, where Glenn Howerton's character learns the same lesson the hard way.
    • The storyline about the Gang creating a podcast. Years later, the cast of It's Always Sunny would create The Always Sunny Pod.
  • I Lied: Frank quite openly admits that he lied about giving Cricket a rotisserie chicken after bribing him to appear on the podcast.
  • Improvised Weapon: When Mac first picks up a hockey stick he claims that "all of his instincts and training" are telling him to use it as a weapon.
  • No, You: Dee's response to Cricket calling her a whore.
Dee: Maybe you're a whore, you stupid ugly homeless bitch!
  • Noodle Incident:
Cricket: Not that I believe in God. I don't, not since that Chinaman stole my kidney.
  • Pet the Dog: After Frank lied to Cricket about having a roast chicken, he shares some lemons with him instead.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Mac uses the word Dago, a slur against Italians.
  • Radio Contest: Mac and Charlie win one at the beginning of the episode after using all the phones in the bar to try and get through.
  • Raw Eggs Make You Stronger: Charlie makes Mac drink several raw eggs as part of his training. He promptly throws them back up again.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Lampshaded when the radio hosts warn Mac to stop cursing on the air.
Mac: You can't censor me, I'm a bit of a badass.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Dennis and Dee show up at the hockey match to get their demo tape to the radio DJs, Mac assumes they're there to support him.
Dee: Uh... yeah! Yeah, that's why we're here!
    Dennis: Primarily, yeah.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Mac only just learned how to ice skate the day before the game. Of course, the second he enters the rink for his big, suspenseful moment, he falls flat on his face and gets knocked out.
  • Training Montage: Used as Charlie attempts to teach Mac how to ice skate and hit a hockey puck over the course of a single evening.
  • Twin Banter: Frank tapes Dennis and Dee's to listen to in his car, and they later attempt to turn it into a podcast.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After Mac drinks the raw egg shake.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Frank gets the Waitress to come into the bar by claiming that Dennis is going to apologize for his past mistreatment of her. Not only does he not apologize, he also laughs at her for being gullible enough to believe that he would.
