Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 06 E 03 The Gang Buys A Boat

Go To

"We've had our hearts set on this boat thing for days now, which in our world is a level of focus that I personally have never experienced."
Dennis

The gang buys a boat and have differing ideas of how it should be used. Mac and Dennis attempt to socialize among the boating community while Charlie, Dee and Frank are left to renovate the boat.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Abandon Ship: Charlie, Dee and Frank all bail out of the boat when it catches fire at the end of the episode.
  • Berserk Button: Mac does not take kindly to being patronized.
  • The Captain: Mac declares himself captain of the boat at the first available opportunity and uses it as an excuse to spend the rest of the episode bossing everybody else around.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cool Boat: Utterly averted with the boat that the gang ends up buying, which is a complete rust bucket and a far cry from the P. Diddy style party boat they'd hoped for.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mac is disturbed by Dennis's talk of "the implication" and repeatedly points out that it sounds an awful lot like rape. Dennis manages to sway him by the end of the episode, however.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Well, "good" might be a bit far, but Mac is understandably disturbed by Dennis planning to use the boat to coerce women into sex. Dennis is deeply confused by this, and spends a good chunk of the episode trying to figure out what Mac's issue is.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Charlie and Frank want to eat the barnacles they scrape from the side of the boat, and later cook and eat catfish.
  • Hook Hand: One of the old seamen at the boat party that Mac and Dennis attend has a hook for a hand. It turns out he lost it through diabetes, which isn't exactly the exciting tale that Mac and Dennis were hoping for.
  • Implied Death Threat: Dennis's explanation of "the implication": that a woman would be less likely to say no to him on a boat in the middle of the open ocean because of the implication that something bad might happen to her if she did.
Dennis: If the girl said "no", then the answer obviously is "no", but the thing is she's not gonna say "no". She would never say "no", because of the implication.
Mac: Now, you've said that word, "implication", a couple of times. Wh-what implication?
Dennis: The implication that things might go wrong for her if she refuses to sleep with me. Not that things are gonna go wrong for her, but she's thinking that they will.
  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • Charlie concludes from the items he finds in the water under the boat that there was "some kind of horse massacre in the revolutionary times".
    • Dennis insists that his plan isn't rape as long as the woman never actually tells him "no." Mac doesn't buy it.
  • Not Listening to Me, Are You?: When Dennis is ranting to Mac about the rest of the gang while Mac is distracted by a flyer for a boat party.
Dennis: You're not even listening to me!
Mac: No, I heard you. You said a bunch of words, right?
  • Seadog Beard: Several of the old seamen at the boat party are sporting this look.
  • Sexual Extortion: Dennis's plan for seducing women with his new boat. He wants to get them alone on the open ocean, get them drunk, proposition them, and imply that they'll meet a terrible fate if they refuse.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The shot of the inflatable tube man still dancing as the boat goes down in flames at the end of the episode is a reference to Moby-Dick, where Captain Ahab is lashed to the flanks of the whale and it looks like he's beckoning the crew of the Pequod.
    • Charlie says that he wants to haul in Forrest Gump amounts of shrimp.
  • The Sociopath: Dennis's "implication" speech demonstrates that he has no qualms about using an implied threat of violence and psychological manipulation to coerce women into sleeping with him. The lack of emotion he displays as he explains his plan to Mac also hints at this.
  • Sucks at Dancing: Mac compares Dee's flailing dance to the inflatable dancing tube men at used car lots. He later buys one and leaves it on the boat to prove his point, and Dee claims that she's learning some amazing new moves from it.
