Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 05 E 05 The Waitress Is Getting Married

Go To

Dee: I cannot believe you're not thinking about Charlie right now! This is gonna crush him.
Dennis: You don't give a shit about Charlie, all you care about is the fact that the Waitress is getting married before you.
Mac: That, or she's afraid that Charlie might blow his brains out and then she'd have to do all the Charlie work.

Dee becomes jealous after finding out that the Waitress is marrying her old high school boyfriend and attempts to derail the wedding by throwing a disastrous bachelorette party. Meanwhile, Mac and Dennis try to distract Charlie by getting him back into the dating game.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: As Dee makes up her fiancĂ©, she notes that she's marrying Sam, a sea salt salesmen on Spring Street.
  • Be Yourself: Utterly defied by Mac and Dennis when they're getting Charlie ready for his date.
Charlie: I am who I am.
Dennis: Right, but let's do who you are minus the hornet stings.
Mac: Pretend like you're not who you are and just try to attract a woman.
  • Blatant Lies: Dee is clearly making up her fiancĂ© on the spot. The dress store attendant perceives this.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Charlie's box of hornets, which he gives to Brad at the end of the episode after learning that he's ditched the Waitress.
Charlie: Let me pop a quick "H" on this box. This way we all know it's filled with the hornets.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Charlie seems to think that it's possible to get honey out of hornets, and also gives some very bizarre answers when Mac and Dennis are helping him fill out his online dating profile. His favorite food? "Milksteak." Hobbies? "Magnets." Likes? "Ghouls." Dislikes? "People's knees."
  • Continuity Nod: Dee brings up the Waitress's drinking problem, her sleeping with Frank and her sex tape with Dennis in an attempt to derail her engagement to Brad.
  • Delusions of Eloquence: When Mac and Dennis instruct Charlie to tell his date that he's a philanthropist:
Charlie: I'm a... full-on rapist. You know, Africans, dyslexics, children, that sort of thing.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Mac advises Charlie to "make a move" on his date when things start going south, pointing out that he has a fifty-fifty chance of success. Unfortunately, Charlie interprets this to mean that he should lunge across the table at her and try to grab her breasts.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Brad is getting his revenge on all the girls who mocked him for his acne in high school by proposing to them and then breaking up with them right before the wedding.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: It's revealed that both the Waitress and her new fiance went to high school with the gang.
  • Evil Is Petty: Brad was a high school loser who turned out quite handsome as he grew up, so he makes an active effort to dating any woman who mistreated him in high school only to break it off right before they get married. Among most revenge schemes, that's a lot of time out of your life.
  • Food Slap: An intoxicated Mrs. Kelly throws her drink in Dee's face at the Waitress's bachelorette party.
  • Friends with Benefits: Frank and Artemis apparently have this kind of arrangement, as the two of them like to engage in disturbingly food-related sex.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Dee attemps to sabotage the Waitress's wedding out of jealousy as she feels that she should be getting married first.
  • It's All About Me: The rest of the gang openly admit that the main reason they're concerned about how Charlie might react to the news is that they're worried he'll either flip out and kill them all or that he'll kill himself and they'll be stuck doing the "Charlie work".
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Brad's attempts to abuse his good looks after his acne disappeared leads to Charlie leaving him a box of hornets. When we see him next, he's covered in hornet scars that look uncannily like acne.
  • Malaproper: A nervous Charlie tells his date that he's a "full-on rapist" instead of a philanthropist.
  • The Nondescript: Dee has no memory of the Waitress being in high school with her.
Waitress: I sat right next to you in trig.
Dee: Huh. Wow, you are very forgettable.
  • Noodle Incident: Frank got yelled at by the Wendy's manager for a mess he made involving Wendy's hamburgers. Moreover, Artemis got "bummed out" at something Frank did involving onions and is not currently speaking to him.
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: Charlie manages to sweat right through his shirt on his date.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Brad thinks he's doing this by getting revenge on girls who mistreated him in high school by dumping them after getting engaged. Charlie does this to Brad by giving him a box of hornets for being cruel to the Waitress and preparing to do the same to Dee.
  • Pet the Dog: One of the few times in the show the characters show actual concern for each other and not entirely about how it impacts their life. Mac and Dennis do just about everything they can to help Charlie's love life just a little before breaking the news the Waitress is getting married. Likewise, while Charlie was planning on giving them the hornets nest, he seems to take more satisfaction in it knowing how scummy Brad really is.
  • Series Continuity Error: The Waitress is revealed to have gone to school with the gang, which Dee has no memory of despite sharing classes and being a figure in their lives for years. An earlier episode had a joke where Dee handed the Waitress an application asking her to fill it out for her and a befuddled Waitress asked if she went to high school.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Gender-flipped with Brad, who had severe acne in high school but has grown up to be incredibly handsome.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Charlie eats an entire block of cheese before his date due to his nerves.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Dee has one after the bachelorette party she'd planned goes awry, ranting about how she should be the one getting married while kicking the air.
Dee: Awww, you bitch! God dammit! I should be the one getting married!
    Frank: This is depressing.
  • Wham Shot: Minor: after Charlie gives the box to Brad and leaves, we cut to a shot of Brad holding the box. It has the "H" on it.
