Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 05 E 04 Gang Gives Frank Intervention

Go To

"I don't know how many years on this earth I've got left. I'm gonna get real weird with it."
Frank

Dennis, Dee and Charlie decide to hold an intervention for Frank after realizing that his sleazy behavior and drug addiction is no fun anymore. Meanwhile, Frank and Mac compete for the affections of Barbara's sister Donna after her husband passes away.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Dennis and Dee's cousin Gail "the Snail" manages to be a nonromantic one to just about everybody. The only way to get rid of her is to repeatedly throw salt at her.
  • The Alcoholic: When Frank starts drinking boxed wine from a soda can, the rest of the gang all admit that it's a good idea and are shown doing the same throughout the rest of the episode.
  • It's All About Me: The Gang doesn't really care about Frank's health or even his alcoholism (they love his wine-in-a-can invention), they just don't like when it gets in the way of THEIR shit.
  • Ambiguous Syntax: Frank asks Mac "You banged my dead wife?" Mac responds "Well, she was alive at the time."
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Subverted. Frank celebrates the death of his brother-in-law Max, but nobody else reacts this way, and it's treated as another sign of Frank's degeneracy.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The opening of the episode has the Gang jokingly suggesting that Frank go over the edge and do something truly heinous. A few moments after this, it's revealed that Frank tricked them into driving him to a funeral under the guise of guiding them to a casual barbecue so he could both needlessly embarrass them and seduce his newly-widowed sister-in-law.
  • Comforting the Widow: Frank and Mac both attempt to do this with Frank's sister-in-law Donna, whose husband has just passed away, despite it being clear that she's not remotely interested in either of them.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Frank incorrectly assumes the rest of the Gang is roasting him instead of giving him an intervention.
  • Continuity Nod: Mac repeatedly brings up the fact that he had sex with Barbara.
  • Creepy Uncle: Frank has sex with Gail, his niece, in a deliberate attempt to be as depraved as possible. She's in her thirties and they're not blood related, but it's still pretty squicky.
  • Defictionalization: Canned wine became a very real, very popular product not long after this episode aired.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even the rest of the gang feel that Frank's depravity is starting to go too far.
Dennis: Why would you want to bang our mom's sister at the funeral of her husband?!
    • Dennis, Dee, and Charlie all hate throwing salt at Gail, but it's the only way to get rid of her.
    • Even Frank thinks he crossed a line when he spent a night with Gail. Not for any moral reasons mind-you, just that he thinks that she's even weirder than him. They didn't even bang, they just got high on Monster energy-drinks and dry-humped.
Frank: I think she gave me poison-ivy.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: When Charlie complains that he and Frank don't play "Nightcrawlers" anymore and Dennis wants to know what it is.
Charlie: It's... what it sounds like.
Dennis: What it sounds like is that you two crawl around like worms in the night. That's what it sounds like.
  • Gasshole: Mac is grossed out by Frank's constant belching, gurgling noises and eventually foaming at the mouth.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: Gail does this at every available opportunity, despite the fact that she's well into her thirties.
Gail: Mom, I'm sexually active now. Get over it.
Donna: You're thirty-three years old, you're supposed to be sexually active! You're not supposed to be fondling your uncle under a table!
  • Internal Reveal: Frank finds out that Mac banged his dead-wife.
  • Likes Older Women: Charlie accuses Mac of having an older woman fetish as a result of his fling with Barbara.
  • Noodle Incident: At the beginning of the episode Frank is wearing a shirt covered in tree sap for reasons that even he doesn't seem to be fully aware of.
Frank: I got really wasted and must've climbed a tree.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The Gang is appalled that Gail the Snail is so flippant and disrespectful during her dad's funeral.
Gail: You guys wanna come to the car and take a puff? I got some medical marijuana.
Dee: (without a hint of sarcasm) We're at your dad's funeral, Gail.
  • Only Sane Man: The therapist whose help the gang enlists in giving Frank an intervention can only look on in horror and bewilderment at their antics.
    • Out of every member of Barbara's family, Donna is the most normal and her reactions to the Gang's and her daughter's antics are how a sensible person would react.
  • Real Men Cook: Averted. Mac fixed several burnt slabs of toast and is in the middle of cooking an unknown monstrosity with dozens of squeezed oranges, discarded egg-shells and a mountain of flour, all in an attempt at seducing Donna.
  • The Roast: Discussed; when the gang ambush Frank in the bar and start berating him, he gets excited and claims that he's always wanted to be "roasted".
  • She Is All Grown Up: Averted. Gail claims that she has "grown into" her body, but her hideous personality is still very off-putting.
  • Staging an Intervention: The gang gives Frank an intervention after deciding that his hedonism has gone too far and is no longer fun for them.
  • The Stoner: Gail mentions that she has "medical marijuana" and is shown smoking weed more than once. Frank also smokes several joints throughout the episode.
  • Stunned Silence: During the Cold Open, the rest of the Gang is reduced to this when Frank reveals that he intends to crash a funeral.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Gail has been this to the Reynolds twins their entire lives.
  • Token Good Teammate: Donna's sister was an Abusive Parent and Rich Bitch, her daughter is an overgrown awkward teenager, her niece and nephew may very well be sociopaths, and her brother-in-law is Frank. While we don't see her do anything saintly, the fact that she DOESN'T act depraved makes her this for Barbara's extended Family.
  • Trigger-Happy: Frank's tendency to start waving his gun around at the slightest provocation is lampshaded when the gang warns the therapist that she might want to bring a weapon of her own to confront him just in case. Sure enough, after luring Frank to the intervention by lying about there being a fire in the bar, Frank bursts in and proves their point in hilarious fashion:
Frank: (drawing his gun) WHERE'S THE GODDAMN FIRE?!!
  • Underdressed for the Occasion: The opening scene sees the gang showing up for a funeral in casual shorts and t-shirts after Frank told them they were going to a barbecue.
Mac: Does anybody else feel really uncomfortable?
Charlie: Yes! We're completely underdressed, it's embarrassing.
  • Womanchild: Gail is a woman in her thirties who still acts like an awkward teenager.
