Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 02 E 02 The Gang Goes Jihad

Go To

"You guys feelin' extreme?"
Charlie

When an Israeli businessman buys a neighboring property of the bar, the floor-layout of which actually includes half of Paddy's Pub, the gang goes to extreme measures to get him to leave. Meanwhile, Frank fights with his ex-wife Barbara over the possessions she got in the divorce, and kidnaps her pet dog.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Barbara is shown to be verbally abusive towards Dee, criticizing her weight and overall appearance.
  • The Blind Leading the Blind: When Mac and Dennis try to explain the Israel-Palestine conflict to Charlie, it's obvious to even Charlie that they have barely any idea about what they're talking about.
  • Bookends: The episode both starts and ends with an outside party entering the bar and interrupting the gang's fighting to speak to the owners.
  • Burning Bag of Poop: Played with. Charlie, Mac, and Dennis first try to get the developer off their property by making a "Jihad Tape" to send to him, but they can't bring themselves to do it. They then use Charlie's suggestion of throwing a flaming bag of poop into the building the developer bought. Unbeknownst to them, there's a gas leak in that building, so when they throw the bag, the building explodes. Also, Charlie drops their jihad tape at the site, resulting in some major Unfortunate Implications.
  • Call-Back: During their argument regarding current events in Israel, Charlie sarcastically asks the others to "Crack an egg of knowledge on me."
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The opening scene has the rest of the gang attempting to take the casts off Charlie's legs, while Dee and Frank are still in a neckbrace and a foot cast respectively after Dennis hit them with his car in the previous episode.
    • Barbara accuses Frank of stealing her belongings from their marital home, unaware that it was actually Dennis and Dee.
  • Could Say It, But...: Mac, Dennis and Charlie think that the lawyer they visit is doing this when he tells them they have no legal recourse, even though he really, really isn't.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In-universe, the guys have this reaction to the tape they made of Mac and Dennis dressed up as Islamic terrorists and yelling in fake "Arabic" to threaten Frenkel - an Israeli businessman - into leaving. They all seem to come to the conclusion that it's a little too extreme even for them (though they still get in trouble for it when authorities find the video in the end).
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The gang's conflict with Frenkel mirrors the Israel-Palestine war, with Frenkel even building a fence around Paddy's at one point.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Charlie is capable of writing a legible script (albeit one apparently riddled with spelling errors according to Dennis) and his writing on the "Jihad Tape" is perfectly normal. This contrasts heavily with Charlie's illiteracy later on in the series, where his writing was barely comprehensible at best, and complete gibberish at worst.
  • Egging: One of the attempts to send Frenkel a message is to throw eggs at his building. However, due to the previous toilet paper prank, Frenkel had a fence built around Paddy's to block the gang from doing so.
  • Global Ignorance: Charlie seems to have no idea where Israel is, and when the other make reference to the troubles there he thinks they're talking about a tsunami. note  Charlie even suggests that one can reach Israel from the United States via train. Mac and Dennis are only slightly better informed.
  • Gold Digger: Frank accuses Barbara of being one.
  • Hand Signals: Frank attempts to use them when he and Dee go to steal Barbara's dog, but he looks like an idiot and Dee just stares at him in disbelief.
  • Hidden Depths: Towards the end of the episode, the gang (minus Frank) are shown singing a cappella together, and they all have fairly decent singing voices.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Barbara asking Dee if she ever thinks about anyone but herself, just after finishing a rant about her divorce while her daughter is standing in front of her in a neckbrace.
    • Frank complains that Barbara plans on committing adultery with Frenkel when he had sex with two strippers in the previous episode.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Charlie tells Frenkel that he's in America now and he can't just come over and steal their land, he points out that that's how America was founded in the first place.
  • The Klutz: Dee knocks over some utensils while trying to make a stealthy escape from Barbara's house with the dog.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Unlike Dennis and Dee, Mac and Charlie instantly capitualte to Frank's demands when he buys the bar at the end of the episode, since they don't want to go to jail for blowing up a neighboring building.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Frank buys Frenkel's building from him so that he technically owns the land Paddy's is built on, effectively forcing his way into the gang.
  • Mistaken for Racist: Dennis is worried about being mistaken for an anti-Semite due to the feud with Frenkel.
  • Mister Muffykins: Barbara has a small, irritating dog that she carries around in her handbag. Frank and Dee end up stealing it, as they claim that she loves it more than anything else in the world.
  • Oh, Crap!: The gang's reaction at the very end of the episode, when the police show up wanting to talk to them about the 'jihad tape'.
  • Running Gag: Barbara continues the trend of people walking into Charlie's apartment and commenting on what a shithole it is.
  • Smart Ball: The typically oblivious Manchild, Mac, is the only one to know that Dennis and Charlie's childish pranks on Frenkel won't do anything to help them get their property back.
  • Three Plus Two: Dennis only considers himself, Mac and Charlie to be true members of the gang, while Dee and Frank are outsiders.
  • Title Drop: Almost.
Barbara: I mean, look at your skin, Deandra. Christ, there is a sun in Philadelphia.
  • Toilet Paper Prank: One of the attempts to send Frenkel a message involves covering his building in toilet paper.
