Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S2E5 "Heart of the Dragon"

Go To

Danny is unsettled by an overwhelming setback. Misty Knight and Colleen Wing join forces to piece together Davos's plan. Davos targets the triads in a sudden and brutal wave of violence. The youthful gang that Danny and Colleen previously faced becomes a key player. Joy looks at her connections after looking at Davos's dark side.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Medicine: Danny spends much of the episode coughing/vomiting up blood, but his treatment just requires stapling shut the gash in his abdomen. The way you end up coughing/vomiting up blood is if you're bleeding into your lungs or stomach, which can't be repaired by suturing an external wound.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: You're preparing to cut off a man's finger with a bolt-cutter, in walks a woman with a gun who tells you to stop.
Punk: Or what, you're gonna shoot us?
    Misty: Yes.
  • Badass in Distress: Danny is injured and lost, requiring Colleen and Misty to go find him.
  • Ballroom Blitz: Davos kills his way through a nightclub while fighting the Golden Tigers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Misty and Colleen turn up just in time to stop Rhyno from cutting off Danny's fingers with bolt cutters.
  • Blunt "Yes": Misty's answer when asked by Rhyno if she would dare shoot him and his group for mutilating Danny.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Danny can no longer draw on the power of the Iron Fist, but he's still got all his martial arts training... once he recovers.
  • Call-Back:
    • Misty says she even does background checks on her dates, a reference to the "Love Bandit" she mentioned in Luke Cage.
    • Danny again has his wounds stapled together, fortunately with a medical stapler this time.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Where Danny's fist glows gold, Davos's glows red.
  • Commonality Connection: Ward says that the "dragon" that Danny feels when he uses the Iron Fist is no different from the power and rage he feels.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Danny suggests Claire Temple could help but Misty shakes her head.
    • Chen Wu is wearing a medical eyepatch from the injury Sherry inflicted.
  • Designated Girl Fight: Downplayed. Colleen and Misty against Walker is an all-women fight, but considering how dangerous Walker is, it's a brutal fight.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Ward sits and listens to Danny as the latter recounts his nights, every night, going out, lighting up the fist, feeling that power, that rage... Ward lampshades it by saying he sounds exactly like the people in his support groups.
  • Dramatic Irony: Danny offers BB and his gang money if they release him, but as they only know him as a guy working for a moving company they've no idea he's a billionaire and dismiss the idea with contempt, threatening to cut his fingers off when he can't pay a mere five hundred for his release on the spot.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Now that she has her revenge on Danny, Joy just wants to sever her ties with Davos and get on with her life. Davos however has other ideas.
  • Fingore: Rhyno almost cuts off one of Danny's fingers.
  • Foil: The Last Words of Danny's mother were that he loved her, which served to sustain him. The last words Davos heard from his mother were her contempt for losing to Danny Rand, and when he approaches her asking for some final words of affection, she is unable to give them.
  • Funny Background Event: Walker's vanishing act in response to Misty's "NYPD. Open the door."
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Where Danny's Iron Fist (like previous Iron Fists) is gold, Davos's stolen fist glows red.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Danny and Ward graduate to this, with Ward watching over Danny as he convalesces, even gently sponging the blood off of him.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: After seeing his boss Punched Across the Room, Chen Wu says he'll help betray the members of his own organisation for Davos, along with anyone else he cares to kill.
  • Internal Reveal: Danny, Colleen, Misty, and Ward learn in this episode that Joy has been in league with Davos and Walker to capture Danny and let Davos steal the Iron Fist from him.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • According to Misty, the police code for a possible suspect with powers is a 6-1-6. 616 is the universe number for the main Marvel Universe in the comics.
    • Misty and Colleen again pair up as per their comic characters.
  • Neutral Female: Unlike Misty, Colleen, and Walker, Joy is definitely not an Action Girl, so while the other three are fighting in her apartment, she just stands in the corner and watches, looking freaked out.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Joy delays Walker from leaving with her money because she wants to discuss her staying as security against Davos. This means she's in her apartment with Misty and Colleen arrive, proving the previously unsuspected link between the two.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Ward calls in his girlfriend to help Danny because they don't want the publicity of taking him to a hospital, but she points out that she's an anesthetist. As usual that's enough of a Back-Alley Doctor to patch up a vigilante, though she tells Ward not to call her for this kind of thing again.
  • Oh, Crap!: Joy stalls Colleen, but when Misty identifies herself as NYPD, she loses her cool and Walker darts off-screen.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • BB calls Colleen once it's clear that the Golden Tigers aren't going to pay for Danny, and it looks like he'll be killed instead of released.
    • Ward drops his asshole act, opening up to Danny and being willing to rush to Joy thinking she's in danger from Davos.
  • Police Code for Everything: 616 is "possible suspect with abilities".
  • Properly Paranoid: The doctor called in to patch up Danny is surprised when Colleen produces a fully-equipped trauma kit.
  • Punched Across the Room: How Davos dispatches the leader of the Golden Tigers.
  • Separated by the Wall: When Davos decides to leave K'un-Lun to find Danny, he approaches the chamber where her mother is meditating and asks her if she has any last words as he may never return. His mother approaches the door, but can't bring herself to speak before Davos leaves.
  • Stage Mom: We learn this episode that Davos's mother was one. She fully expected him to become the next Iron Fist, and wanted nothing less. So she disciplined him from an early age to prepare him for it, and when he lost the final fight with Danny, she renounced him as her son.
  • Tap on the Head: Once Danny's on the ground, the goons who want to sell him to the Tigers hit him with a pipe.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Demonstrating his Character Development, Ward not only apologizes to his girlfriend for involving her in a shitty situation but understands why she's upset and how what he did was wrong. Later, he commiserates with Danny, understanding something of what he's going through.
  • Truth in Television: If a cop has probable cause to suspect something is wrong, they can enter your home without a warrant, as Misty does when Joy's poker face completely fails.
  • Vigilante Man: Davos decides to stop the Triad war his way, by killing not only the warring Triad factions but every other criminal in the city. Maybe he should call himself The Punisher instead of the Iron Fist.
  • Who Are You?: The man Davos saves from the Golden Tigers asks this. Davos of course replies that he is The Immortal Iron Fist.
  • Worf Had the Flu: If Danny hadn’t been so brutally injured, he would have made mincemeat out of the guys beating the crap out of him.
