Recap / Il Etait Une Fois Man E 10 The Age Of Vikings

Go To

Original French Title: L'Âge des Vikings

Setting: AD 790 to 1066

In the mid-ninth century, with Charlemagne out of the way, Europe is under attack by savage foreigners, such as the Saracens, the Magyars, and the Vikings. But, let's travel back in time to AD 790, just three years before the very first Viking attack...

Tropes:

  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Viking!Pierre is stabbed In the Back by Viking!Teigneux, presumably for the sake of showing a Viking Funeral.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: As the pilot episode (later aired as Episode 10), this episode has a number of these. For example, Pierre is blond instead of brunet and has two sons instead of one, whereas Nabot has orange hair instead of bright red.
  • From Beyond the Fourth Wall: When Viking!Pierrette is upset that her husband is not monogamous, the Clock has to remind her that there is no such thing as monogamy among Viking men.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Averted when Viking!Teigneux kills Viking!Pierre and then is slain by Viking!Pierrot. Probably because there was zero blood.
  • Horny Vikings: Averted, as none of the Vikings wear horned helmets.
  • I Kiss Your Foot: Charles the Simple tries to make Rollo do this. Rollo defies this by flipping the king off his throne instead.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Hastein and his men are having difficulty assaulting a fortress. Because of the failure, they approach the castle to parley, saying that Hastein was killed in battle — and as such, they wish to convert to Christianity; Hastein is to be buried with his weapons as per their tradition. Once inside, he jumps out of the coffin, passes the weapons to his men, and they start the rampage.
  • In the Back: Viking!Pierre is killed in this manner.
  • The Low Middle Ages
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Viking!Teigneux is put to the sword by Viking!Pierrot after killing Viking!Pierre. However, towards the end of the episode, Teigneux does reappear as Hastein.
  • Viking Funeral: Viking!Pierre is subject to this after he gets killed.
  • William Telling: One of the contests Viking!Pierre has with Viking!Teigneux is shooting a ball off the son's head with a bow and arrow. Pierre succeeds, but Teigneux gets (understandably) hesitant; even when he fires his arrow within a foot from his son, he ends up shooting through Maestro's beard hair (though, thankfully, not his body).
