Recap / I Dream Of Jeannie S 1 E 17 The Richest Astronaut In The Whole Wide World

Go To

When Tony is forced to let Roger wait in the living room, Roger discovers and absconds with Jeannie's bottle. Ignoring Tony's warnings, he works Jeannie hard getting all sorts of fancy things for him.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Blunt "Yes": When Roger says in horror that he's going to be shot for high treason, Tony comments, "Yeah."
  • Cargo Ship: In-Universe; when he's not using her powers, Roger stows Jeannie's bottle in a safe. Midway through the episode, Tony talks to Jeannie while she's inside the safe. Dr. Bellows comes in, much to Tony's dismay, and says that with every other crazy thing he's seen Tony do, falling in love with a safe makes sense.
  • Faint in Shock: Upon seeing Jeannie emerge from her bottle for the first time, Roger passes out. He then faints again after being revived by Jeannie.
  • Gilligan Cut: After Tony talks Roger into giving him a photo of his new living quarters, Roger suspects he's up to something and wonders why he wanted it. Then the scene cuts to Tony bringing Dr. Bellows the photo.
  • Guile Hero: When trying to talk Roger into letting Jeannie go doesn't work, Tony resorts to tricking him into a position where he'll get himself in trouble and need Tony to get out of it.
  • Never My Fault: Tony offers Roger a way out of the trouble he's in if he lets Jeannie return to him, and Roger is incredulous that Tony still wants her back after seeing her cause this much trouble. Tony, who warned Roger about the potential issues of using a genie's power, retorts that she wasn't the one who caused the trouble.
  • Sadistic Choice: After an unsuccessful attempt to talk Roger into letting Jeannie go peacefully, Tony shows a photo of his new mansion to Dr. Bellows and points out that Roger is working on a very important project. Dr. Bellows and General Peterson conclude that Roger is selling military secrets to another nation. Roger has the choice of saying nothing and getting executed for treason or explaining about Jeannie and getting tossed out of the space program. Tony provides a third option on condition of Roger letting Jeannie return to him. Jeannie removes Roger's fancy things and changes the past so that neither Dr. Bellows nor the general remembers they existed.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Roger is facing treason charges (because of all the expensive stuff he got from Jeannie that he can't explain) he begs Tony for help:
Roger: Come on, you're my buddy! Share and share alike?
Tony: You're offering me half a firing squad?
  • Time Master: Jeannie's powers include the ability to manipulate time, which she uses to pull an in-universe retcon to get Roger out of trouble. Once she's done, the things that got Roger in trouble were removed before his superiors saw evidence of them, meaning that Dr. Bellows and General Peterson no longer think he's a spy.
  • Water Wake-up: Jeannie dumps water on Roger to wake him up when he faints upon finding out she's not human.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Roger is smitten with Jeannie before he finds out that she's a genie rather than a human woman. After finding out, he treats her as a living luxury dispenser, only letting her out of the bottle to do his bidding. Tony is horrified that he's treating a warm, sensitive woman like that.
  • Why Didn't I Think of That?: Once Tony explains what he had Jeannie do to solve the problem, Roger laments that he could have done the same thing if he'd only thought of it.
  • With Friends Like These...: Roger is far from his best in this episode, kicking off the main plot by stealing from Tony because he wants to live the high life using Jeannie's powers.
