Recap / I Carly S 02 Ep 19 I Must Have Locker 239

Go To

iMust Have Locker 239 is the 19th episode in the 2nd season of iCarly.

Sam and Freddie are forced to share the same locker after they both win a contest, and they clash over each other's ideas for it.

Meanwhile, Carly asks Spencer to give her art lessons so she can draw a bunny properly, but she mistreats him, since (in Carly's opinion) he causes more harm than good.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop:
    • Sharing is hard, but it's important to learn.
    • Treat your teachers with respect.
    • The Carly-Spencer subplot has one. Spencer claims that to be an artist, you have to be spontaneous and creative, rather than just following instructions from a class on how to draw in a rigid manner, such as drawing merely straight lines and shapes.
  • Berserk Button: Spencer (obviously) does not take denigration of his artistic skills well. Carly taking a community school's art class drives him mad and leads to him sabotaging the class.
  • Delayed Reaction: Freddie negotiates with Sam about getting her half of the locker as Sam mentions that her mom is driving a car to fetch her just after having eye surgery. Freddie still goes on his negotiation until Sam's statement sinks in.
  • Easily Forgiven: Carly is quick to forgive Spencer for embarrassing her at the community center because he only wanted what was best done.
  • Epic Fail: The humongous jar of fat cakes contains 2,718 Fat Cakes, a lot of which are visible. Gibby guesses 5. Principal Franklin says he's calling Gibby's parents to have him tested.
  • "Jar of Jellybeans" Contest: The titular locker is won with a contest featuring a giant jar of Fat Cakes. Freddie guesses accurately using math, while Sam guesses accurately because she knows her Fat Cakes.
  • Jerkass Ball:
    • Carly really Took a Level in Jerkass in this episode by both denouncing Spencer's artistic tutoring and screaming in front of her former art teacher that he's not a good artist at all. This causes the two to be banned from the community center.
    • In addition, Carly's approach to art is practically robotic since she is only interested in drawing a rabbit to prove Sam and Freddie's ridicule of her art wrong, unlike Spencer's whose art is more exaggerated and wild. She dismisses Spencer's tutoring that she must first develop a passion for art, and even gets hostile at her brother for trying to make her draw something other than a rabbit.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite her treatment of Spencer, Carly was right to call him out for teaching her more than what she requested, given that she only wanted to learn to draw a bunny properly.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: As rightly-served karma for hostilely refusing any of Spencer's advice, Carly remains an untalented artist at the end with nobody to teach her how to draw. To make this even more karmic, Carly only wanted to learn how to draw to get back at Sam and Freddie.
  • Loophole Abuse: Gibby performs this to Mr. Howard. As he points out in the student handbook, the dress code says what kind of shirts he can't wear, but there isn't actually a rule that says he has to wear a shirt.
  • Persona Non Grata: Spencer messing with Carly's art class causes them both to be banned from the community center. The center even took their pictures and thumbprints.
  • Shouldn't We Be in School Right Now?: Carly is never seen in school for the rest of the episode after Sam and Freddie win the locker. Lampshaded when Freddie says, "She overslept this morning" before Principal Franklin announces the winner. Justified in that Spencer kept Carly up all night trying to make her draw spontaneous and random things at random times.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Spencer and the community art teacher fight over just what makes an artist by painting each other repeatedly until they're both covered thickly in paint. But then the teacher admits that she now believes Spencer had a point and they make up by kissing.
  • Take Our Word for It: We never see the first bunny Carly drew, but we do get a few words on it.
  • Terrible Artist: Carly draws a bunny very poorly and crudely, and is mocked by Sam and Freddie for it. The first bunny she drew before that was even worse — having slipper feet, bullet hole eyes, and was carrying a hose.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Freddie wins a competition for the giant locker. He proceeds to do a victory dance of sorts, insults Sam... and then it's revealed that Sam won the competition as well. To add insult to injury, at the very end of the episode, Sam's mom (who just had laser eye surgery) crashes her car into the school and demolishes the locker in one fell swoop.
